Goldsmith Repeats As Offensive Player of the Week, Four Schools Earn #BEfutbol Honors
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
David Goldsmith, Butler, Sr., F (Bristol, England)
David Goldsmith repeats as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after a five-point performance against Villanova on Saturday to continue No. 10 Butler’s five-game winning streak. Goldsmith had two goals in the 3-2 overtime victory, scoring the golden goal at 95:02. Goldsmith netted the first goal of the match in the 18th minute, taking advantage of a rebound on the left side. He also assisted on Butler’s second goal, giving him a foot on all of Butler’s scoring for the afternoon. He had nine shots in the match, Butler’s only action last week. The win gave Butler three points as the Bulldogs open league play 1-0-0 and 5-0-1 on the year.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Cory Brown, Xavier, Jr., D (Nelson, New Zealand)
Junior Cory Brown quarterbacked a Xavier defense that picked up its first shutout of the season on Saturday against DePaul. The Blue Demons came into the match in the top-10 nationally in goals scored. Brown and the Xavier back line held DePaul to just two shots total and zero on the frame. Earlier in the week, Xavier suffered a non-conference setback to Louisville, but held the Cardinals to below its season shot average. The Cardinals came in averaging 16 shots per match and the Musketeers held them to just nine attempts, four on goal. Brown played a full 180 minutes in a 1-1-0 week for Xavier.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Luis Barraza, Marquette, So., GK (Santa Teresa, N.M.)
Sophomore keeper Luis Barraza helped Marquette to earn a point in the BIG EAST standings with seven saves against St. John’s in a 0-0 draw decision. By allowing no goals scored, Barraza picked up his fifth career shutout and first of the season. The sophomore made all but one save in a busy second half before stopping the Red Storm’s only shot on frame in the second extra-time session.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Max de Bruijne, DePaul, Fr. D (Abcoude, Netherlands)
Freshman defender Max de Bruijne added two assists during a week where DePaul did not allow a goal in the run of play. The DePaul defense allowed just nine shots on goal in a 1-1-0 week, with the only goal allowed a PK in the 82nd minute against Xavier. De Bruijne assisted two of the four goals scored in a 4-0 non-conference victory over Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Riggs Lennon, Creighton, Sr., F (Paradise Valley, Ariz.)
Lennon ended the week with three goals during victories over UMKC and Seton Hall. Lennon converted two penalty kicks, including the eventual game-winner, in the BIG EAST opener against the Pirates.
Alex Kapp, Creighton, Sr. GK (Amawalk, N.Y.)
Kapp had a 2-0-0 week in goal for the Bluejays tallying his third shutout, while making four saves in a non-conference win over UMKC and a season-high six saves, including two on a PK opportunity in a 4-1 league win over Seton Hall.
Brett Campbell, Georgetown, Sr., F (Wallingford, Pa.)
Scored the game-winning goal against Providence in the 54th minute to give Georgetown their first win in league play. Campbell had three shots, two on goal against the Friars.
Andrew Withers, St. John’s, RS-So., GK (Wellington, New Zealand)
Made three saves in a scoreless double-overtime draw against Marquette to give St. John’s one point in the league standings. Withers saw four shots on goal, 18 overall. He made a game-saving stop in overtime for the Red Storm.
Majed Osman, Xavier, RS-Sr., M (London, England)
Scored the game-winner, his first goal of the season, on an 82nd minute PK to give XU a 1-0 win over DePaul to start league play. Osman fired off seven shots, four on goal. He had seven of the team’s 18 shots overall for the week.
