NEW YORK –
League action kicks off Tuesday night for BIG EAST volleyball with five teams in action and two conference matches. St. John’s travels to Georgetown for a 6 p.m. match up, while Seton Hall is at Villanova at 7 p.m. Providence will host Bryant in a midweek non-conference match.
 
St. John’s is currently tied with Villanova for third in the standings after both posting 9-4 non-conference records to date. Seton hall is in eighth with a 6-7 record and Georgetown is 4-9 in last. Of the group of four, just Villanova made the league championship last season.
 
This year, the BIG EAST Championship, presented by Jeep, will be held at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26. Villanova was one of three BIG EAST teams to play in the NCAA Tournament last year.
 
St. John’s is coming off a 1-2 weekend with a win over Delaware State, but losses to Albany and Connecticut. Georgetown traveled to Colorado and went 2-2 with wins over Air Force and Southern Utah and losses to Northern Colorado and Denver.
 
Seton Hall went 1-2 last weekend with a 3-2 win over Rutgers, but losses to Seattle and Princeton. Villanova played in the Big 5 Challenge and went 2-1 with local wins over Penn and La Salle, but a loss against Temple.
 
Providence is second in the league at 11-4. They are coming off a 2-2 weekend at Columbia, where they won matches over Fordham and Hartford, but lost to UMBC and at Columbia. Providence won eight matches in a row from Aug. 27-Sept. 9.
 
In the Polls:
In the latest AVCA poll released on Monday, Sept. 19, Marquette ranks just outside the top 25 with the second-most votes. Creighton also continues to receive votes.
 
NCAA Stat Rankings:
Butler leads the country in team kills (832) and team assists (783). Bulldog Anna Logan leads the nation in kills SG highs (279) and total kills (279). She is also second in the country in points (316.0).
 
Win No. 200:
Marquette head coach Ryan Theis earned career win No. 200 over the weekend with a 3-1 win over Missouri State. He is in his seventh year overall as head coach, his third at Marquette where he has a 56-23 record so far.
