NEW YORK – Butler, Creighton and Xavier lead the league at 2-0-0; St. John’s and Villanova also added three points with wins on Saturday.
Xavier 2, Georgetown 0
Goals by Jalen Brown and Matt Vasquenza along with some highlight-reel defense led Xavier to a second straight BIG EAST win on Saturday, as the Musketeers took down homestanding Georgetown by a score of 2-0 at Shaw Field. The Musketeers improve to 4-2-2 (2-0 BIG EAST), getting their second straight shutout to begin league play. Georgetown is 1-1 in BIG EAST play, 2-6 overall. Georgetown outshot Xavier 14-10, but shots on goal were even at 6-6. Georgetown keeper J.T. Marcinkowski made four brilliant saves, including two in the final minutes that robbed Majed Otim and Osman of great looks.
No. 12 Creighton 4, DePaul 1
Riggs Lennon tied a Creighton school-record with four goals as No. 12 Creighton defeated DePaul 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago. The Bluejays improved to 5-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons fell to 5-3-2 and 0-2-0 during conference action. Lennon became the seventh player in Bluejay history to record a four-goal match, and the first since 2001. Mike Tranchilla was the last Creighton player to score four goals, as he accomplished the feat as part of Creighton's 5-3 victory over Evansville during the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
No. 10 Butler 2, Providence 0
Butler stayed undefeated with a 2-0 win over visiting Providence Saturday night at the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs converted a pair of penalty kicks to secure the win and move to 7-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. Providence falls to 4-4 (0-2 BIG EAST). Jared Timmer scored the first PK in the 77th minute. Lewis Suddick scored on his PK four minutes later. On the evening, Butler out-shot PC, 18-8. Eric Dick made four saves in his fourth shutout of the season, including one save early in the second half on Julian Gressel that kept the game scoreless. Friar Ben Seguljic turned away eight Butler shots on goal.
St. John’s 1, Seton Hall 0
Despite playing the final 69:19 of the match with just nine field players, the St. John’s men’s soccer team managed to keep Seton Hall off the scoresheet and found the back of the net themselves, downing the Pirates, 1-0, at Belson Stadium on Saturday night. Filippo Ricupati scored his third goal of the season to lift St. John’s (4-2-2, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) to the 1-0 victory, converting on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
Villanova 2, Marquette 1
A pair of second half goals from freshman Jacob Anderson helped lift Villanova to a 2-1 victory Saturday evening over Marquette in a BIG EAST match at Valley Fields. VU improves to 4-3-1 overall, 1-1 BIG EAST, while the Golden Eagles drop to 3-2-3 overall, 0-1-1 BIG EAST. Anderson tallied the second and third goals of his college career, both of which were set up by junior midfielder Miguel Polley. All three of the freshman forward's goals this year have been scored on the road and tied or given the Wildcats a lead. The game's first goal came in the 51st minute. Marquette’s Toby Howell sent the pass to Patrick Siegrist who finished the play with right footed strike that found the back of the net at 50:32 to stake Marquette to a 1-0 lead.
