Creighton, Butler and Villanova Represented on BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Awards
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Riggs Lennon, Creighton, Sr., F (Paradise Valley, Ariz.)
Riggs Lennon tied the Creighton single-match record with four goals during the Bluejays’ 4-1 at DePaul on Saturday against DePaul. The feat was only accomplished six other times, but it was the first time since 2001. Lennon took only four shots for his four goals, which is BIG EAST game high in both points and goals in a match this season. Lennon’s third and fourth goals were only 33 seconds apart. Lennon also led the Bluejays with three shots during Tuesday’s non-conference match against No. 8 Denver. For the season, Lennon leads the team with eight goals, six over the past three matches.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Mitch Ostrowski, Butler, R-Sr., D (Houston, Texas)
Senior defender Mitch Ostrowski guided the Butler defense in an impressive 2-0 week for the No. 10 Bulldogs. Butler allowed only one goal in 180 minutes of play on the week, including positing a shutout against Providence. Ostrowski also had two assists in the team’s 3-1 win over Evansville Tuesday. In two matches last week, Butler held its opponents to 15 shots, while getting off 36 shots.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Alex Kapp, Creighton, Sr., GK (Amawalk, N.Y.)
In a 1-0-1 week for Creighton, Alex Kapp had 13 saves and his fourth shutout of the season with .50 goals against average and .929 save percentage. In a win over DePaul on Saturday, Kapp had four saves and allowed just one goal, his fourth for the season. The senior keeper tied the Morrison Stadium record for most saves by a Creighton goalkeeper with nine during the Bluejays’ 0-0 draw against No. 8 Denver on Wednesday in non-conference play. For the season, he is third in goals against average with .47 and is second in save percentage with .897.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Jacob Anderson, Villanova, Fr., M/F (Altadena, Calif.)
Jacob Anderson scored both goals on Saturday night to help Villanova rally past Marquette for its first BIG EAST win, 2-1 over the Golden Eagles. Anderson scored headers of the foot of Miguel Polley and now has three goals on the season. All three of his goals have been scored on the road and each has been critical to a victory, including two game winners.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Lewis Suddick, Butler, Fr., M (Newcastle upon the Tyne, England)
Suddick scored a goal in each game of a 2-0 week for Butler with a goal in a 3-1 win over Evensville and another in Saturday’s BIG EAST win over Providence, converting a penalty kick.
Simon Megally, DePaul, Sr., M (Park Ridge, Ill.)
Megally scored the first goal in a 2-1 non-conference road victory at Northwestern, while adding an assist on the game winner. On Saturday, he assisted the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Creighton.
Jordan Shankle, St. John’s, Jr., D (Frisco, Texas)
Shankle anchored the Red Storm back line as they held Seton Hall scoreless despite playing the final 69 minutes with only 10 men. Shankle helped limit Seton Hall to just seven shots overall with only two on target in a 1-0 win.
Will Steiner, Villanova, RS-Jr., GK (Point Lookout, N.Y.)
Steiner made five saves, including a pair of huge stops in the final 90 seconds, to preserve the 2-1 win at Marquette for Villanova. He also recorded his first shutout of the season in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at Saint Joseph’s.
Jalen Brown, Xavier, Sr., F (Indianapolis, Ind.)
Scored the game-winner on the road against Georgetown to help Xavier improve to 2-0 in league play, while also recording an assist on the second-half insurance goal. His three-point day tied a career-high.
