Recapping Week 2 of BIG EAST Play
Old Dominion kicked off the second week of conference play topping Georgetown 5-0 behind four points from Danielle Grega and stellar defense. Overall, ODU registered 12 shots total while the Hoyas posted nine. Top-ranked Connecticut took down Temple 6-0 by way of a hat trick from Charlotte Veitner. Liberty followed with a 6-1 victory over fellow league newcomer Quinnipiac. The Lady Flames’ offensive showing saw goals from five different players, including two from Abby Julius. Closing out Friday, Providence defeated Villanova, 3-1. The conference foes were deadlocked in a 1-1 tie at the half, but the Friars secured the go-ahead goal and eventual game winner from Adrienne Houle in the 60th minute. Providence’s Megan Hamilton added an insurance goal in the 67th minute.
Week 3 Matchups
Quinnipiac and Villanova will start the weekend at 4 p.m. on Friday, with the Bobcats trying to steal one on the road from the Wildcats. Providence will host No.1 UConn at 5 p.m. in a battle to stay undefeated in conference play. Liberty and ODU will meet in a Virginia showdown as the teams faceoff at 5 p.m. in Norfolk. In the last conference game on Friday, Georgetown will visit Temple, with both squads push for their first conference win this season.
Clash of the Undefeated
This Friday will put two winning streaks to the test with undefeated No. 1 UConn facing off against Providence. The Huskies enter the weekend riding a 10-game win streak and a 2-0 showing in conference. The 2016 season is the second consecutive year that UConn has gone undefeated in its first 10 games. Providence enters the weekend with an 8-2 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars are in the midst of a five-game win streak, marking the longest such streak since the 2014 campaign, when the team also recorded five-straight wins. Additionally, Providence is a perfect 5-0 at home on Lennon Family Field while the Huskies hold a 13-0 road record since the 2015 season.

Two BIG EAST squads can be found in the latest week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, with the Huskies moving into the top spot and the Monarchs jumping to No. 14. UConn remains the only undefeated team in Division I, propelling the Huskies (10-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) from the third to first with 860 points and 14 first-place votes. Coming off a home win against BIG EAST opponent Temple, 6-0, and a dominant 5-1 road victory against No. 9 Boston University., it is the first time since early October of 2015 that UConn has been No. 1 in the poll. ODU moved (5-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) moved up three spots to No. 14 after picking up a 5-0 win over BIG EAST foe Georgetown last Friday. In the RPI, UConn and Old Dominion lead the way at No. 2 and No. 9, respectively. They are followed by Temple at 39, Providence at 41, Liberty at 42, Villanova at 61, Georgetown at 71 and Quinnipiac at 76.
Veitner’s National Value
UConn junior Charlotte Veitner was selected to the NFHCA’s weekly honor roll, after tallying four goals and an assist in Connecticut’s wins over Temple and Boston University last week. The forward holds a NCAA Division I-best 40 points on 16 goals and eight assists. She leads the nation in goals per game (1.60) and points per game (4.00). The recognition is Veitner’s second national honor this year, having been selected the national offensive player of the week last week, after registering six goals against then-No.14 Virginia.
