Last Night In #BEfutbol – 9.3
NEW YORK – Friday night’s men’s soccer schedule featured wins by Marquette, Providence and DePaul. Xavier held No. 12 Virginia to a 1-1 tie, while No. 8 Creighton and No. 24 Georgetown lost close one-goal matches to their top 10 opponents. Seton Hall lost on the road at UMass-Lowell in overtime and Villanova lost a close one at Harvard. The BIG EAST went 3-4-1 overall on Friday.
Saturday has just one game on the docket for men’s soccer. Butler will host S.I.U.E. at 7 p.m.
Harvard 2, Villanova 1
A furious rally over the final minutes by Villanova fell short Friday, as the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 decision to Harvard at Ohiri Field. The Crimson recorded the victory in their season opener while the Wildcats fall to 0-2 overall. Freshman Nikkye DePoint scored his first career goal late in the contest for Villanova. Harvard scored twice, netting the first in the 26th minute and adding another at 74:46. DePoint’s goal came in the 83rd minute.

DePaul 3, Albany o
Two goals by Stijn van der Slot of the Netherlands and one by Germany’s Philipp Koenigstein sparked DePaul to a 3-0 victory at Wish Field. Koenigstein launched DePaul (1-1-1) to their first win of the season converting a free kick just outside the box in the 11th minute. The Blue Demons are now 10-5-1 in home openers since 2001 when coach Craig Blazer took over the program.

Providence 2, Holy Cross 1
Providence defeated Holy Cross, 2-1, at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The game marks the Friars' first win of the 2016 season. Providence advances to 1-2 overall while Holy Cross drops to 1-1. Julian Gressel began the Friars' attack in the 11th minute with a header wide of the goal off of a Providence cross. Gressel continued the Friars' attack in the 25th minute on a one-on-one with a Crusader defender in the box resulting in a save by the Crusader's goalkeeper Henry Stutz. Holy Cross’ goal came in the 30th minute.

UMass-Lowell 1, Seton Hall 0 (OT)
The Seton Hall men's soccer team (1-2-0) was felled by a golden goal in the 98th minute at UMass Lowell (3-0-0) on Friday night at Cushing Field. The overtime setback came at the end of the first overtime period after a scoreless regulation Wuilito Fernandes found the back of the net for the River Hawks at the end of the first overtime period, spoiling what had been to that point a terrific defensive effort for the Pirates. Julian Spindler made three saves on the night, none bigger than a diving stop on a direct free kick attempt in the 44th minute.

No. 2/3 Clemson 1, No. 8/7 Creighton 0
No. 8 Creighton picked up its first loss of the season after No. 2 Clemson scored a goal during the second minute of Friday night's match at Historic Riggs Field. The Bluejays fell to 1-1-0, while the Tigers improved to 3-0-0. Just a little over a minute into the match, Oliver Shannon reached the six-yard box with a defender between him and the goal, but a quick move to his right put him in position to launch a shot towards Creighton goalkeeper Alex Kapp. Shannon fired the ball just out of the reach of Kapp and inside the right post to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. It is the second one-goal loss for the BIG EAST to the Tigers in two weeks.

Xavier 1, No. 12/15 Virginia 1 (2OT)
Xavier gave No. 12 Virginia all it could handle Friday night, striking first at Klöckner Stadium before settling for a 1-1 draw after narrowly missing a couple go-ahead chances in both overtimes. With the result, the Musketeers moved to 1-1-1 on the young season, while Virginia went to 1-0-1. After Matt Vasquenza put XU up 1-0 in the 58th minute, Virginia quickly responded in what was a back-and-forth showdown all night.
*Of Note: Due to Sunday's inclement weather in the Norwood area, XU Soccer Complex has been rendered temporarily unplayable. It was announced today that
the Musketeers will now face Dartmouth at UC's Gettler Stadium.

No. 7/5 Maryland 2, No. 24/25 Georgetown 1
The No. 24 Georgetown University men's soccer squad lost, 2-1, in the final minute to the No. 7 University of Maryland (2-0-1) on Friday evening at Ludwig Field in front of a near-record crowd. It was the second time in three games that the Blue & Gray fell in the final minute of regulation. The Hoyas are currently 0-3-0 on the season and will host Virginia Tech in the home opener on Monday. In the final minute with the scored tied at one, Maryland had possession and a Terrapin was taken down in the box resulting in the penalty kick. Sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski dove to his right and came up with the stop, but the rebound went right back to the shooter, Gordon Wild, who sent it right back in to score the game winner.

Marquette 4, Illinois-Chicago 1
Marquette (2-1-0) scored four unanswered goals after allowing an early score just 31 seconds into the match and defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago 4-1 in the road opener at Flames Field on Friday night. Freshman Luka Prpa impressed once again, registering another six-point effort with two goals and two assists in the win, giving him 12 points (4 goals, 4 assists) in his last two matches. It highlighted a come-from-behind effort that resulted in the second straight victory for the Golden Eagles.
