Providence Captures Cross Country Weekly Awards

NEW YORK – Providence junior Aaron Hanlon and Friar graduate student Sarah Mary Collins are the winners of the first BIG EAST Male & Female Athletes of the Week in Cross Country for the 2016 season.
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Aaron Hanlon, Providence, Jr. – Hanlon won the 5K at the University of New Hampshire Tri-Meet with a time of 15:26.47.  The victory was the first of his collegiate career.  The Friar team won the meet against host New Hampshire and Holy Cross and took the first eight spots.

BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Sarah Mary Collins, Providence, Gr. – The Friar women’s team also competed against Holy Cross and host New Hampshire with Collins capturing first place in the women’s 5K with a time of 17:21.4.  Her winning time was 10 seconds faster that the second-place finisher and was seven seconds faster than last year’s winning time at the same meet.  Collins led a 1-5 sweep for the Friars.

Men’s News
Creighton’s Garrett Kenyon tied for third place in a field of 90 competitors at the Hawkeye Invitational to help the Bluejays to a fifth-place finish.  He ran the 6K course in 17:59.9.  It was Kenyon’s first cross country meet since the fall of 2014 after he was redshirted last fall…Butler junior Bobby Johnson was edged in the closing stretch and finished second in the team’s opener held at the Northview Church course that hosted the 2014 BIG EAST Championships.  Johnson covered the 6K course in 18:24…Xavier sophomore Grayson Jenkins placed eighth at the Queen City Invitational with a 6K time of 18:43.9.  The team took third place in the meet…DePaul’s Alex Campanella tied a career best at the UIC Opener with a time of 19:15.1 in the 6K race.  He finished seventh overall and the Blue Demons won the meet against five other teams…Bryant Cordova of Seton Hall paced the Pirates with a third-place finish at the Monmouth Kick-Off.  He ran the 6K course in 19:22.26, finishing less than five seconds behind the winner.  His time was 22 seconds better than his time at the same event last fall.
 
Women’s News
Emily Martin of Creighton finished fourth of 83 competitors at the Hawkeye Invitational, leading the Bluejays to a second-place finish among eight clubs.  Her time in the 3,000 meters was 10:24.2 and she finished less than four seconds out of first place.  The fourth-place finish was the best of Martin’s career…Butler freshman Josephine Thestrup edged teammate Katherine Turner to win the Butler Opener.  Thestrup covered the 5K in 17:55 at the Northview Church Course.  The Bulldogs won the four-team event…Seton Hall’s Christiana Rutkowski was the top Pirate finisher at the Monmouth Kick-Off meet.  After missing all of last fall due to injury, the junior ran the 4K course in 15:21.51.  She finished 11th overall. 
 
The BIG EAST And The USTFCCCA Preseason Poll
Providence, Georgetown and Villanova were represented the men’s and women’s Preseason U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association Poll.  In the men’s poll, Georgetown was ranked seventh and Providence was 21st.  In the women’s poll, Providence was third and Georgetown was 19th.  Villanova received votes in both polls.
