Butler's Kamar Baldwin Scored 21 Points In 83-78 Win Over Xavier
MBB Minute -- Butler Edges Xavier On A Busy Saturday
In Saturday’s battle between ranked teams, No. 12/13 Butler made 13-of-14 from the foul line in the final 2:18 and emerged with an 83-78 win over No. 15/14 Xavier at Hinkle Fieldhouse. After scoring a season-low 25 points in the first half and trailing by six at the break, the Bulldogs netted 58 points in the second half. Freshman Kamar Baldwin scored all of his 21 points after intermission. Edmond Sumner led Xavier with 22 points. Butler is 5-1 against ranked teams this season.
Villanova struggled early against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden before recovering for a 70-57 victory. For the first time this season, Donte DiVincenzo led the team in scoring, notching 19 points. Mikal Bridges added 12 points. St. John’s helped force Villanova into a season-high 20 turnovers. Shamorie Ponds led four players in double figures with 13 points.
Providence remained an extremely tough out at the Dunkin’ Center where it improved to 11-1 this season after holding off Seton Hall 65-61. The Pirates rallied from a 16-point deficit to tie the game three times in the final minutes, but Kyron Cartwright’s 3-point play with 32 seconds remaining gave the Friars the lead for good. Rodney Bullock had a game-high 22 points and Cartwright finished with 20 points. For the Pirates, Desi Rodriguez had 20 points and Angel Delgado set a school record with his 11
th straight double-double, registering 12 points and 16 rebounds.
At Verizon Center, Georgetown rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half to defeat Connecticut 72-69. L.J. Peak scored 16 of his 21 points after halftime. Jesse Govan contributed 15 points and seven rebounds. The Hoyas trailed UConn 43-29 before a 16-2 run tied the game 45-45.
Marquette used a barrage of 3-pointers in the first half to help secure an 83-58 victory over visiting DePaul. Andrew Rowsey and Katin Reinhardt, both coming off the bench, scored 24 and 19 points, respectively. The Golden Eagles connected on 12 shots from beyond the arc before halftime. Billy Garrett Jr., who made his 105
th collegiate start, led the Blue Demons with 12 points.
Creighton had little trouble with Division II foe Truman State, winning 101-59 before 17,466 at CenturyLink Center. No Bluejay played more than 21 minutes. Justin Patton had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Marcus Foster scored a team-high 21 points.
All 10 league teams will be in action on Monday for the annual BIG EAST Marathon on FS1. The day starts with Marquette at Butler at noon ET.
