NEW YORK – With BIG EAST teams entering the final month of competition before the conference championship on Feb. 22-25, every meet is crucial in building team momentum. Pacing the league this past weekend was Villanova freshman Andrew Kelly and Georgetown senior Katie Duncalf, who were selected this week’s Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week.
BIG EAST Male Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week
Andrew Kelley, Villanova, Fr.
Kelley helped the Wildcats to a 130-68 win over BIG EAST foe, Providence on Saturday afternoon. The freshman was part of the 200-yard medley relay that took first with a time of 1:45.13. He also won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.84, which was more than six seconds faster than the next competitor.
BIG EAST Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week
Katie Duncalf, Sr.
The veteran celebrated her Senior Week capturing three of four individual races and two relays, to lead the Hoya women to a 2-1 week. Swimming in three meets in four days, Duncalf helped Georgetown's 200-yard medley relay to two wins. She also set two McCarthy Pool records in back-to-back home meets. On Saturday, Duncalf swam a 56.84 in the 100-yard backstroke. Not only did that set the record, but she won the race by nearly five seconds as she was the only swimmer under a minute. On Monday, she again set a pool record in her final home meet, touching the wall in 2:03.08 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Notable Performances
Harriet Davies, Butler, Fr.
The rookie recorded a bronze finish in the 100 free (55.89) at Indiana State, while also anchoring the 400 Free Relay with a split time of 55.47.
Jacob Kohlhoff, Georgetown, So.
Swimming in three meets in four days, Kohlhoff medaled in all five of his individual races, including the 100- and 200-yard freestyles against American, with times of 47.91 and 1:47.86, respectively. He concluded the weekend with a victorious finish in the 500-yard freestyle against Rider on Monday.
Joshua Tosoni, Seton Hall, Fr.
The freshman captured the 100-and 200-yard backstroke at Rider with respective times of 58.56 and 2:07.48. His time in the 200 was just 0.07 off the pool record.
Sara Ouellette, Seton Hall, Fr.
Ouellette led Seton Hall in a 184-110 victory at Rider last Friday, after claiming the top spot in the 200 freestyle (1:57.80), 200 backstroke (2:07.12) and 200 individual medley (2:13.14).
Alexa Fabbri, Villanova, So.
The Wildcat veteran won three events in Villanova’s dual meet with Princeton, taking the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:50.54, the 50-yard freestyle at 23.59 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.36. Her time in the 200-yard freestyle ranks third in the conference.
