DePaul and Providence Share Season’s First Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – After guiding their teams to victorious opening weekends, DePaul’s Nathan de Veer and Providence’s Risa Takenaka earn the season’s first BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors.
BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Nathan de Veer, DePaul, Sr.
De Veer went 4-0 overall this past weekend as DePaul took on Green Bay Friday and Detroit on Saturday. The senior won all his singles matches at No. 1, defeating Flo Kraenzler 7-5, 6-1 from Green Bay on Friday and Patryk Koscielski from Detroit 6-7 (9), 6-3, 11-9 on Saturday. In doubles, de Veer paired with Alex Galoustian at No. 1. The two defeated Matej Kostadinov and Miles McDowall from Green Bay 6-3 and Koscielski and Artem Vasheshnikov from Detroit 6-2.
BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Risa Takenaka, Providence, So.
The sophomore kicked off the season with a win at the No.1 singles slot in straight sets (6-0, 6-2), defeating Elena Melian Puigventos of Saint Peter’s. In doubles action, Takenaka teamed up with Katherine DeNucci to win No. 2 doubles, 6-1, and secure the doubles point for the Friars.
