Xavier's Trevon Bluiett Named BIG EAST Player of the Week
Xavier's Bluiett, St. John's Ponds Tabbed For MBB Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Bluiett, a junior, earned his first Player of the Week honor this year and third of his career, while Ponds earned his fourth Freshman of the Week honor this season.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, Jr.
Bluiett averaged 30.5 points and 7.0 rebounds, which included a league-high 40-point game, in a 1-1 week for the Musketeers. He also shot 70.4 percent from the floor and 70.6 percent from 3-point range. Bluiett poured in 40 points in an 86-78 loss at No. 19 Cincinnati and followed that with 21 points and 10 rebounds in an 82-77 win at St John’s. Bluiett ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring with an 18.5 average.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Fr.
Ponds averaged 22.5 points in a 1-1 week for the Red Storm. In a 91-86 victory at Providence, he scored 22 points and made 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He was 6-of-6 from the foul line to seal the win in the final minute. Ponds scored a game-high 23 points in an 82-77 defeat against Xavier. For the season, he is the top BIG EAST freshman scorer, averaging 17.2 points.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Kelan Martin, Butler, F, Jr.
Averaged 18.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Posted 10 points and 11 rebounds in a 61-54 win at Seton Hall.
Justin Patton, Creighton, C, Fr.
Averaged 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and shot 68.4 percent from the field in a 1-1 week. Had 20 points and seven boards in a loss at Georgetown.
L.J. Peak, Georgetown, G, Jr.
Averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds while helping defeat two ranked teams – Creighton (71-51) and at Butler (85-81). Shot 58.3 percent from the field. Passed 1,000-point mark for his career.
Kyron Cartwright, Providence, F, Jr.
Averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had all 18 of his points in the second half and added six rebounds and six assists in a 79-78 win at Marquette.
Mikal Bridges, Villanova, F, So.
Averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had a team-high 20 points in a 74-72 loss at Marquette and shared the team scoring high with 15 points in a 61-59 win over Virginia.
