MBB Minute -- Butler Takes Down Villanova; Creighton, Providence Win
Butler’s 15-6 run to finish the game gave the Bulldogs a 66-58 victory over No. 1 Villanova on Wednesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler ended the Wildcats’ 20-game winning streak, which dated to last year’s NCAA Tournament run.
Butler earned the victory without a player scoring more than 13 points, but the Bulldogs had a 33-25 rebounding edge and made all 15 of their free throw attempts. Kethan Savage and Andrew Chrabascz were the 13-point scorers. Chrabascz also had seven rebounds and three assists. Kelan Martin finished with 12 points and six boards. Villanova’s Jalen Brunson led all scorers with 23 points.
Creighton bounced back from a loss against Villanova last Saturday with an 85-72 win over St. John’s at Carnesecca Arena. Freshman Justin Patton could not be contained. The 7-0 center posted game highs of 25 points and nine rebounds, while shooting 11-of-14 from the field. Marcus LoVett led the Red Storm with 23 points.
Providence broke into the BIG EAST win column with a 76-70 decision against visiting Georgetown. Jalen Lindsey led four Friars in double figures with 19 points. Emmitt Holt added 17 points. The Friars are 10-0 at home. Georgetown’s Marcus Derrickson scored a game-high 26 points. Akoy Agau had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
BIG EAST play continues on Saturday with all 10 teams in action. Georgetown hosts Butler at noon ET on FOX. CBS Sports Network has a doubleheader, DePaul at Seton Hall at noon followed by Creighton at Providence at 2 p.m. FS1 has two games, starting with St. John’s at Xavier at 2:30 p.m. and Marquette at Villanova at 7:30 p.m.
