MBB Minute -- Butler Prevails In OT At Georgetown On Busy Saturday

Coming off a win on Wednesday against No. 1 Villanova, No. 18 Butler knew a visit to Georgetown would be a challenge.  The game went into overtime, but the Bulldogs left Verizon Center with an 85-76 victory.  Butler freshman Kamar Baldwin scored a collegiate-high 16 points and Kelan Martin helped with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Three other Bulldogs had 11 points.  Georgetown was led by L.J. Peak’s 21 points and freshman Jagan Mosely’s 20 points. 

No. 16/15 Xavier stayed in first place in the league standings at 3-0 with a 97-82 win over St. John’s.  Edmond Sumner led six players in double figures with 20 points.  Reserve Kaiser Gates added a career-high 17 points.  Sumner also had seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.  St. John’s again was led offensively by its freshman backcourt of Marcus LoVett (32 points) and Shamorie Ponds (21).  Ponds also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Villanova put its first loss of the season in its rearview mirror with a 93-81 victory over Marquette at Wells Fargo Center.  The Wildcats shot 65.3 percent from the field and led by as many as 30 points. Villanova got 73 points from four players – Kris Jenkins (23), Josh Hart (19), Jalen Brunson (16) and Mikal Bridges (15).  Marquette was led by guard Markus Howard, who scored 21 points. 

No. 10 Creighton remained unbeaten away from home with a 78-64 victory at Providence.  Freshman Justin Patton continued his productive play with 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks.  He shot 9-of-13 from the floor.  Marcus Foster and Khyri Thomas finished with 17 and 16 points, respectively.  Maurice Watson Jr. had 11 points and 14 assists.  The Friars were led by Emmitt Holt’s 17 points and seven rebounds.  Guard Kyron Cartwright left the game in the first half with an injury and did not return.

Seton Hall’s Desi Rodriguez scored 23 of his 25 points in the first half when the Pirates built a 41-31 halftime lead en route to an 87-56 decision over DePaul at Prudential Center.  Rodriguez made his first nine shots of the game and played only 24 minutes.  Angel Delgado posted his ninth straight double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.  DePaul was led by Billy Garrett, Jr., who finished with 22 points.
