Women's Soccer Notes - 10.11.17
BEDN Coverage
With just four rounds of games left on the women’s soccer schedule, the BIG EAST Digital Network will provide complete coverage of the remaining tilts. Jockeying for postseason berths can be watched live on the FOX Sports Go app, beginning this weekend with five matches. Saturday will see a trio of tilts beginning with RV Butler visiting DePaul at 2 p.m. (ET). A pair of contests will be played under the lights at 8 p.m., with local rivals Seton Hall and St. John’s squaring off in Queens, N.Y., while Xavier will travel to Marquette. Georgetown visits Providence to kick things off on Sunday at 1 p.m., while Creighton hosts Villanova at 2 p.m., to close out the weekend. The top six teams at season’s end qualify for the BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep, with the top two teams earning byes into the semifinals. New for this season, all five matches will be played on host sites of the higher seed. BEDN will also cover the BIG EAST Championship First Round and Semifinals before FS1 takes over for the title match.
Standings Check
With more than half the league season over, BIG EAST teams are coming down the homestretch of 2017. No. 15 Georgetown currently leads the pack in first place with 13 points, a two-point lead over RV Butler and Xavier, which are knotted in second. The Bulldogs and Musketeers played to a scoreless draw on Oct. 5, so postseason seeding would be based on their results against the rest of the BIG EAST Championship field, should they both qualify and remain tied at season’s end. Providence is alone in fourth with nine points, followed by a tie between Villanova and Marquette in fifth. The Wildcats have the tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles by way of their win in Milwaukee on Sept. 28. Currently on the outside looking into the league postseason field is DePaul in seventh with five points, followed by Seton Hall and St. John’s in a tie for eighth (three points) and Creighton (10
th, two points) rounding out the list. Teams earn three points for a win and one point for a draw.
In The Polls
Georgetown fell three spots in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, coming in at No. 15. The Hoyas have remained in the top 20 in all nine polls this season, peaking as high as No. 5. Butler continued to receive votes for a fifth consecutive week. The Bulldogs are unbeaten over their last 12, having set a program record with 12 shutouts on the season. The Hoyas are unbeaten over their last nine, with senior Rachel Corboz eclipsing the 100-career point mark last week, currently ranking fifth among active Division I players with 104.
