Men's Soccer Notes - 10.13.17 (PDF)

NEW YORK  –
BIG EAST men’s soccer once again begins Friday night with the featured match up in the fifth week being No. 9 Georgetown at Villanova. The match will be played at Talen Energy Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union at 7 p.m.
 
At the near midway point of league play, Georgetown and Butler have established themselves at the top of the standings at 3-1-0 each. The Hoyas defeated the Bulldogs last Friday afternoon, earning the edge in the event of a tie at the end.
 
Three of the four Saturday matches will be on BEDN this weekend: Seton Hall at Providence, DePaul at Butler and Xavier at Creighton.
 
Only Seton Hall goes into the weekend with a win streak, having won their last two BIG EAST matches.
 
Georgetown has won three-straight league matches, but lost in non-league play to Duke this past Monday.

Seton Hall at Providence at 4 p.m. ET
Seton Hall travels to Rhode Island on a two-match league win streak after marking wins over Creighton and DePaul. Providence’s points in the league standings have come off ties as the Friars tied with Marquette last week (2-2) and DePaul in Week 1. Seton Hall has not played a match since last Saturday, but Providence had a midweek tune up which resulted in a 2-1 overtime win over in-city rival Brown. Seton Hall’s Andres Arcila leads the league with 17 points (7G, 3A) and three game-winning goals. Six of his points (three goals) have come in league play. Providence is led by Mac Steeves with 15 points (6G, 3A). Steeves has two goals in BIG EAST action. Seton Hall leads the all-time series 13-9-6.
 
DePaul at No. 20 Butler at 7 p.m. ET
Butler has just one loss in league play, but has been shutout in its last two matches. The Bulldogs will be looking to rebound from these losses at home against DePaul this weekend. DePaul is currently tied for seventh in the league with four points and is also coming off two losses - one against Seton Hall and a midweek non-conference loss to Northwestern. Butler’s Brandon Guhl is second in the league in points with 16 (7G, 2A). Keeper Eric Dick is second in saves per game (4.20) and save percentage (.778). DePaul’s Philipp Konigstein leads the Blue Demons with 12 points (5G, 2A), which ranks 10th in the league. DePaul leads the all-time series 2-1-1.
 
XAVIER at CREIGHTON at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT
Creighton is coming off a big 6-1 win in non-league play, matching a stadium record in goals scored. The Bluejays finished their last league match in a 2-2 tie as their game with St. John’s was shortened due to weather. The Musketeers lost their last match on the road at Villanova, 2-1. The Musketeers won both their games at home in league play, but have struggled on the road with two losses. Creighton’s Ricky Lopez Espin has led the Bluejays in points with 16 (7G, 1A). Xavier has three players who rank in the top 10 among league players in scoring with Matt Vasquenza (15 points - 6G, 3A); Simen Hestnes (14 points - 4G, 6A) and Samson Sergi (Seven goals). Creighton leads the all-time series 3-2-1, but the regular season record is tied at 2-2-1.

Georgetown will be looking to rebound off a loss earlier this week, 2-1, at home to then-No. 19 Duke. The Hoyas are leading the conference with nine points and a 3-1-0 record. Villanova is coming off a 2-1 win over Xavier last week at home. The Wildcats ended a three-game losing skid with the victory. VU has four points so far in the BIG EAST standings. Achara leads the Hoyas offense with six goals. Lucas Hodges leads the offensive for Villanova with five goals. Georgetown and Villanova have a series history that dates back to 1983. The Hoyas lead the all-time series 23-7-4.
 
Marquette at St. John’s - Saturday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN3)
St. John’s ranks third in the league standings currently with seven points. The Red Storm has had a tough four-game stretch with three losses (all in non-league play) and a tie at Creighton. The tie however kept them in the top of the standings with the point earned. St. John’s wins in league play come at the expense of Seton Hall and Xavier. Marquette defeated Seton Hall as well, a 4-2 victory at home on Sept. 23. The Red Storm is led  by Alistair Johnson with nine points (4G, 1A), but Harry Cooksley scored both goals at Creighton and ranks second with eight points (3G, 2A). For Marquette, Grant Owens leads the offense with three goals.
 
Among Active Division I NCAA Career Leaders
Will Steiner of Villanova is currently the active career saves leader among Division I goalkeepers. He has 304 career saves in 6,348.18 minutes in net. His time in goal ranks second among career leaders. Steiner has had 45 of those saves this season. Friar Mac Steeves has 78 career points, ranking 10th among all NCAA Division I active players. He ties for eighth among all active career leaders with 33 goals, six this season.  St. John’s Andrew Withers ranks second among active leaders in save percentage (0.824) with 122 saves in 34 career games. PC’s Colin Miller also ranks in the category, ninth with a 0.797 percentage. Creighton has two players lead the country in career games played. Lucas Stauffer has been so consistently good for the Bluejays, he has played in 80 career games to lead all Division I active players. Ranking second with 79 games played is teammate Noah Franke. Butler keeper Eric Dick ranks in three career categories: fourth in solo shutouts (23), and tenth in saves (225) and minutes (5,735.93). Xavier’s transfer Simen Hestnes has cracked into the career lists and ranks sixth in assists per game (0.41). He leads the league with six this season.
 
Week 4 In the Books
On Friday night, then-No. 10 Georgetown knocked off then-No. 15 Butler as the lone unbeaten league team with a comanding 3-0 victory at home. The Hoyas wasted no time and scored in the second minute. In the night match, St. John’s rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie then take the lead in Omaha against Creighton with two goals by Harry Cooksley. The Bluejays tied it up in the 69th minute before weather ended the game early. Both teams came away with a point in the standings.
 
Seton Hall and Villanova each earned three points on Saturday and tied for fourth place with Xavier.  Marquette and Providence finished in a 2-2 tie and each earned a point in the standings. Villanova’s 2-1 win came at the expense of visiting Xavier. Seton Hall also won at a home, a 2-1 victory over DePaul.
