BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Samson Sergi, Xavier, RS-So., F (Ashburn, Va.)
Xavier sophomore Samson Sergi scored two goals in Xavier’s 4-1 win over Providence on Saturday night, his first career multi-goal match. Sergi scored in the second minute to give the Musketeers a 1-0 lead, tapping in a long volley from Cam Taylor. In the fourth minute, Sergi finished from the left side of the box from Matt Vasquenza, the eventual game-winner. Sergi is tied with Butler’s Brandon Guhl for the league-league in goals with seven. Sergi has made the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll the past two weeks.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Lukas Pangonis, Seton Hall, Sr., D (Kaunas, Lithuania)
Seton Hall sophomore Lukas Pangonis helped Seton Hall to their first BIG EAST win of the season, a shutout victory over visiting then-No. 25 Creighton. Pangonis led a defensive unit that held Creighton to just nine shots, the second-lowest of the season for the Bluejays, three on goal, the lowest in league play. The Seton Hall offensive added two goals for the win.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Eric Dick, Butler, RS-Sr., GK (Carmel, Ind.)
Butler’s Eric Dick repeats as BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the second-straight week, third overall. This week, the redshirt senior saved the match for the Bulldogs with a sprawling save in the 105th minute against St. John’s. Dick’s left-handed dive save knocked away St. John’s Wilhelm Nilsson’s shot that was inches away from the inside of the right post. In addition to his diving save in overtime, Dick had three other saves in the match, preserving the clean sheet, his fourth of the season, 23rd of his career.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Zach Nelson, Xavier, RS-Fr., XU (West Linn., Ore.)
Xavier redshirt freshman Zach Nelson helped hold Providence to one goal on Saturday in a 4-1 win for Xavier as Nelson faced a season-high 18 shots, seven on frame. Nelson had six saves in the 90 minutes. The lone goal scored against him was by BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Mac Steeves on a PK.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Stijn van der Slot, DePaul, Grad., F (Noordwijkerhout, Netherlands)
Stijn van der Slot led the Blue Demons to their first BIG EAST win of 2017, scoring the game-winning goal against Villanova.
Jacob Montes, Georgetown, Fr., M (Lake Worth, Fla.)
Montes had a foot on both Georgetown goals as he marked two assists on the then-No. 14 Hoyas’ 2-1 victory over Marquette.
Diego Núñez, Marquette Jr., F, (Alcalá de Henares, Spain)
Scored the game-tying goal against then-No. 14 Georgetown, his second goal in three games.
Andrew Withers, St. John’s, RS-Jr., GK (Wellington, New Zealand)
Despite the loss, Withers had six saves as the Red Storm took then-No. 22 Butler to two overtimes.
Andres Arcila, Seton Hall, Sr., M (Cartagena, Columbia)
Arcila scored the eventual game-winning PK against then-No. 25 Creighton on Saturday in the ninth minute of action leading Seton Hall to its first league win of the season.
