Men's Soccer Notes -- 10.21.17 (PDF)
NEW YORK – Week 6 of BIG EAST men’s soccer features rematches of last year’s semifinal games as Villanova travels to Butler and Creighton is at Providence. Starting Saturday the final 20 BIG EAST men’s soccer matches will all stream on BEDN via FOX Sports GO as the BIG EAST gives full coverage of the race for the regular season title and the six championship berths at stake.
The final day of BIG EAST play, Wednesday, Nov. 1 will feature a special edition of the Fall Sports Update with BIG EAST Digital Network Correspondent Jay Alter giving whip around coverage from the BIG EAST studios in Manhattan.
With four matches left, Butler and Georgetown are tied for the 2017 BIG EAST men’s soccer regular season title. Georgetown would get the No. 1 seed over Butler as the Hoyas defeated the Bulldogs, 3-0, in their head-to-head match.
If the season ended today, Creighton, St. John’s and Marquette would all be in the field, with a three-way tie for the final spot between Xavier, Villanova and Seton Hall.

SETON HALL at GEORGETOWN at 1 p.m. ET
Georgetown leads this series 18-14-13. The two teams have played each other since 1985. In 2016, this match finished with a scoreless tie in South Orange, N.J. The year prior, the Hoyas scored a golden goal in OT to win 3-2. The Hoyas are coming off a big win this week, having knocked off No. 3 Maryland in College Park, 1-0. The win ended the Terps 30-game regular-season unbeaten streak. Nationally ranked at No. 13, the Hoyas are at the top of the conference, led on offense by Achara with 13 points (6G, 1A) and freshman Derek Dodson with 12 points (5G, 2A). The game-winner against Maryland was scored by Jacob Montes. Seton Hall is in the mix of the championship field currently with six points, having lost their last match at Providence, 2-1. Seton Hall’s offensive efforts have come off the foot of Andres Arcila who leads the Pirates with 17 points (7G, 3A).
ST. JOHN’S at DEPAUL at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT
St. John’s lead this series 7-3-3. DePaul won last year's meetings in Queens, 1-0. St. John’s lost a heart-breaker at home in Belson Stadium last week to Marquette in double overtime, but SJU is in the mix tied for third with seven points in the current league standings. VILLANOVA at BUTLER at 7 p.m.
The last time Villanova and Butler met at the Sellick Bowl was the semifinals of the 2016 BIG EAST Championship. The teams played to a 0-0 draw before Butler advanced on PK’s 3-1. Butler leads the all-time series 3-1-1 with Villanova earning a 2-1 win in 2014. Last year’s regular season meeting had the Bulldogs win 3-2 in OT. Butler is tied on top of the standings with Georgetown, and is coming off an exciting 0-0 draw against top-ranked Indiana in front of a record-breaking crowd of 6,105 at the Sellick Bowl. The Bulldogs boast leading scorer Brandon Guhl with 20 points (9G, 2A). Keeper Eric Dick has six shutouts on the year with a .803 save percentage and a 0.96 goals against average. MARQUETTE at XAVIER at 7 p.m.
The series between these two Midwest foes is tied at 2-2 with Marquette earning the win in 2016, 4-1. The prior three meetings were all one-goal shutouts with Xavier winning in 2015, 2014 and Marquette winning their first meeting in 2013. With a win at St. John’s last week, Marquette jumped a few teams in the standings to be tied at third with seven points. The Golden Eagles have two leading point getters with Grant Owens with three goals and Connor Alba with a goal and four assists. Xavier has four scorers with 10 or more points as Matt Vasquenza leads the way with 15 points (6G, 3A). Samson Sergi is close behind with 14 points, tied with Simen Hestnes. Sergi has seven goals while Hestnes has four goals, six assists. Xavier is trying to end a two-game skid after suffering losses on the road to Villanova and Creighton. Xavier has two BIG EAST wins on its home field, including a victory over then-No. 9 Georgetown in overtime.
CREIGHTON at PROVIDENCE at 7 p.m.
Another BIG EAST semifinal rematch from 2016, Creighton defeated Providence 2-1 at Chapey Field to advance to the ‘16 BIG EAST Finals. The Creighton-Providence rivalry added depth to it last year as the two teams met again in the NCAA third round. Providence got the better of Creighton in this meeting by the same score to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight. In the regular season meeting, PC also won, 1-0. Although the two teams first played each other in the BIG EAST regular season of 2013, the two teams have already played nine games with Providence leading the series 5-4-0. Creighton is currently third in the league standings having defeated Xavier, 4-1 and tying St. John’s 2-2 in the last two weekends. The Bluejays boast the scoring foot of Ricky Lopez-Espin who has nine goals (20 points) on the season. Providence earned its first BIG EAST win last weekend, 3-1 over Seton Hall.
