NEW YORK – The sixth Saturday of BIGE EAST men’s soccer action featured three one-goal games, an overtime scoreless draw and a dominant performance by one of the top teams in the league. Both teams tied at the top of the standings, Georgetown and Butler, extended their league standings point total to 15 to remain tied for No. 1. The Hoyas and Bulldogs are 5-1 in BIG EAST play.
St. John’s (6-6-2, 3-2-1) won and broke free of the three-way tie it had found itself in last week and currently the Red Storm are alone at No. 3 in the league standings with three games left to go. Xavier (8-4-2, 3-3-0) defeated Marquette to jump up to fourth place in the standings. Creighton (8-4-2, 2-2-2) finished in a scoreless draw with Providence (4-7-3, 1-2-3) and earned a point to remain at fifth in the standings with eight points. If the season ended today, Marquette (2-9-2, 2-3-1) would be the sixth team in with seven points.
Rounding out the current standings with a week and a half/three games left, are Villanova (7-8-0, 2-4-0), Providence (4-7-3, 1-2-3)and Seton Hall (5-8-1, 2-4-0) tied with six points. DePaul has four points with a 4-9-2, 1-4-1 record.
League play continues on Wednesday this week with all five times in action on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

The Hoyas scored two goals in the first 11 minutes as Christopher Lema and Derek Dodson found the back of the Pirate net early. Georgetown had a 2-0 lead into halftime and extended its lead to three as Lema scored his second goal of the match in the 56th minute. Lema’s first goal was unassisted. Jacob Montes and Declan McCabe assisted Dodson’s goal and Ethan Lochner was credited with the assist on Lema’s second goal. Hoya keeper JT Marcinkowski made five saves and Seton Hall keeper Peyton Elder made three. Georgetown outshot Seton Hall 13-9.

ST. JOHN’S 1, DEPAUL 0
St. John’s keeper Andrew Withers made five saves on the road at Wish Field, marking his sixth shutout of the season. His efforts in goal were aided by a score by freshman Jack Shearer in the eighth minute. His goal was assisted by Matt Forster. Despite the one-goal win by the Red Storm, the Blue Demons had the advantage in shots, 14-10 and corners, 14-10. DePaul keeper Quentin Low also had five saves.

Butler posted its third consecutive shutout celebrating Senior Night with a 1-0 win over Villanova at the Sellick Bowl. The game’s lone goal came in the 16th minute as Lewis Suddick scored for the fourth time this season. The assist was awarded to senior Bennett Kim, his first point of 2017. Butler keeper Eric Dick made two saves for his seventh shutout of the season. Villanova keeper Will Steiner made two saves for the Wildcats. Shots were close as Butler led 8-7. Butler had six corners to Villanova’s three.

XAVIER 1, MARQUETTE 0
Xavier’s Josh Grant scored just after halftime, providing the difference in the match in front of more than 1,000 fans at the XU Soccer Complex. Grant, a senior defender, scored unassisted in the 49th minute. It was the fourth shutout of the season for Xavier as the Musketeers have won six-straight matches at home. XU keeper Colin Hanley made two saves in net. Marquette keeper Noah Heim saved four. Xavier outshot Marquette 16-10.

The two teams each earned a point in the league standings as Creighton and Providence tied at 0 last night at Chapey Field in Anderson Stadium. Providence keeper Colin Miller made six saves, while Creighton’s net-minder Michael Kluver made two saves. Creighton outshot Providence 17-8.
