#BEfútbol Minute: Wednesday’s Match Day Has Tourney Bids For Grabs

NEW YORK – At stake on Wednesday as the 10 BIG EAST teams will play the first of three games in a week are two of the six BIG EAST Championship berths. A positive result for Georgetown and/or Butler, a tie or a win, will solidify the Hoyas and Bulldogs into the 2017 tournament field.
With other results pending, by the end of Wednesday night, Butler and Georgetown can also potentially lock up a first round bye as the top two teams.
All 15 final games will be covered on BEDN as men’s soccer plays a Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday schedule for its final week of the regular season. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, BEDN will also have a #BracketDay special in studio in New York with wall-to-wall coverage of the final day of the regular season. The final day of the regular season will also be featured on the BIG EAST Conference Instagram story from the five locations.
BIG EAST Regular Season Awards will be announced the Friday prior to the start of the BIG EAST Championship. The final BIG EAST weekly award will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 2.
Marcinkowski Named United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week
For the third time this season, the BIG EAST can boast the national player of the week as Georgetown’s JT Marcinkowski earned the award on Tuesday after a two shutout, 13-save week for the Hoyas who defeated then-No. 3 Maryland and moved up from No. 13 to No. 10 this week. Marcinkowski was this week’s BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week. Xavier’s Cam Taylor and Seton Hall’s Andres Arcila also earned United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week honors.
National Poll Notes - Week 9
The United Soccer Coaches released their Week 9 National Poll and Regional rankings on Tuesday. Georgetown moved back up into the top 10 with 387 points. Butler jumped back into the rankings at No. 21 and 104 points. The Bulldogs were receiving votes last week. Creighton continues to receive votes as well. In the Soccer America Poll, released on Monday night, Georgetown moved up to No. 7 and Butler remained at No. 23.
Regional Rankings Roundup
In the regional rankings, the BIG EAST has four teams in the top 10 of the Great Lakes Region, led by Georgetown at No. 2. Butler is No. 4 with a 9-4-1 record, Creighton is fifth with an 8-4-2 record and Xavier is No. 6, also at 8-4-2. Also ranked in the Great Lakes Region are Western Michigan (1), Akron (3), Wright State (7), West Virginia (8), University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (9) and UIC (10).

XAVIER at DEPAUL at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT
Xavier played themselves into the mix last week with a 1-0 win over Marquette to earn a big three points in the standings and move up to fourth with three games to go. The series between Xavier and DePaul been dominated by Xavier who leads it 5-0-0. Xavier won last year’s meeting 1-0. For the Musketeers Samson Sergi has been their main goal-scorer with seven. Matt Vasquenza leads XU in point with 15 (6G, 3A). For DePaul Philipp Konigstein leads in goals (6) and points (14).
PROVIDENCE at GEORGETOWN at 2 p.m. ET
The series between Providence and Georgetown dates back to 1990 with Georgetown leading, 15-13-1. Georgetown has won the last two meetings, both by the score of 1-0. In 2014, Providence won 2-0. Georgetown has four players in double-digit points led by Derek Dodson and Achara with six goals each. GU keeper JT Marcinkowski has seven shutouts on the year with a .836 save percentage. Providence redshirt senior Mac Steeves leads the Friar goal effort with eight on the year for 19 points.
BUTLER at SETON HALL at 7 p.m. ET
Butler leads the all-time series with Seton Hall, 3-0-1. The Bulldogs won last year’s meeting 1-0 and 3-0 the prior year. Butler is coming off back-to-back shutouts, with a win over Villanova, 1-0, at home last Saturday. Seton Hall last week, 3-0 at Georgetown and is currently stuck in a three-way tie at seventh place, just outside the BIG EAST tournament field. Butler continues to be led by Brandon Guhl with 20 points (9G, 2A), while Seton Hall’s main point scorer Andres Arcila has 17 points (7G, 3A). Butler senior keeper Eric Dick has posted three-straight shutouts over the past two weeks, seven total for the year.
VILLANOVA at ST. JOHN’S at 7 p.m. ET
The Red Storm is looking for three more points with a win to help St. John’s return to the BIG EAST tournament field for the first time since 2012. St. John’s and Villanova have played each other since 1984 with St. John’s leading the overall series 22-9-5. Villanova has won the last four meetings however and in 2012, the teams had a scoreless draw. Villanova needs the three points to break out of a three-way tie at six points in seventh place in the standings. St. John’s Alistair Johnston and Jack Shearer share the high-point title this year for the Red Storm with nine points each. But keeper Andrew Withers has kept SJU in the games with five shutouts and a 0.69 goals against average and a .841 save percentage. Villanova’s Lucas Hodges leads the Wildcats scoring effort with 13 points (5G, 3A). Villanova is coming off a 1-0 loss at Butler, while St. John’s is playing off a 1-0 road win at DePaul.
CREIGHTON at MARQUETTE at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT
Creighton leads the all-time series against Marquette 3-1-0 with the Golden Eagles winning the first meeting 1-0. Creighton won last season’s meeting 2-1. The Bluejays are currently in fifth place in the league standings with nine points after tying with Providence 0-0 last week. Marquette is one point behind with seven and if the season ended today would be the final team in the playoff picture. The Bluejays are lead by Ricky Lopez-Espin with 20 points (9G, 2A). Marquette has two players with six points, Grant Owens who leads MU with three goals and Connor Alba with a goal and four assists.
