NEW YORK – The bracket for the 2017 BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship presented by Jeep has been set on the final night of the regular season. With a 1-0 win over Xavier, RV Georgetown clinched the BIG EAST regular-season title for the second time and accompanying No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The Hoyas earn a first-round bye, along with No. 2 seed Butler, which won in overtime this evening 2-1 over Villanova.
Top-seeded Georgetown (12-3-3, 6-1-2 BIG EAST) is the reigning BIG EAST Champion, winning last year’s conference tournament on its home turf at Shaw Field. The Hoyas’ first-round bye sends them straight to a semifinal match on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. GU will host the winner of the 4-5 first round matchup, which pits No. 4 seed Marquette (12-6-1, 5-4) against No. 5 seed Xavier (8-7-4, 4-3-2).
The Golden Eagles won at Seton Hall Thursday night, 2-0, to lock up BIG EAST Championship First Round hosting duties. The Musketeers make their first BIG EAST Championship appearance since joining the Conference prior to the 2013 campaign. MU and XU square off in Milwaukee on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. ET.
Second-seeded Butler (12-1-5, 5-0-4) is unbeaten over its last 16 matches, climbing to No. 20 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs will face the winner of the 3-6 showdown, which sees No. 3 seed Providence (10-7-1, 5-3-1) hosting sixth-seeded DePaul (7-7-4, 3-2-4) this Sunday at 2 p.m. Butler will host its semifinal match on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
The Blue Demons were the final team to punch their postseason ticket, using a 1-0 victory over St. John’s this afternoon in a win-or-go-home regular-season finale. The Friars dropped a 2-1 decision at Creighton Thursday night to close out the regular season.
Both BIG EAST Championship First Round matches will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, as will both Semifinal tilts. FS1 takes over for the final, slated for Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. New for this season, the higher seed will serve as host of each contest in all three rounds. Five of the six participants in this season’s tournament have BIG EAST Championship titles to their credit, with Georgetown winning in 2016, Butler in 2015, DePaul in 2014, Marquette in 2012 and 2013, and Providence in 1993.
