Georgetown Men Win Third Straight X-C Title; Villanova Edges Providence For Women's Crown

The Georgetown men won their third straight cross country title, while the Villanova women ended Providence’s two-year reign as champions at the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships Presented by Jeep Saturday at the Wayne Dennehl National Course. 

Individually, Georgetown’s Jonathan Green took first place by completing the 8K course in a time of 24:27.6, finishing 4.9 seconds faster than Villanova’s Andrew Marston (24:32.7).  For the women, Providence’s Catarina Rocha won the 6K race in a time of 19:59.0 ahead of teammate Brianna Ilarda, who finished second in 20:12.2.

The Georgetown men finished with 40 points and placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 16.  In addition to Green, a graduate student who missed last year’s Championship because of injury and finished second two years ago, sophomore Reilly Bloomer took fourth in a time of 24:50.8.  Freshman Nicholas Wareham was seventh (25:00.6) followed by sophomore Jack Van Scoter at 12th (25:06.9) and junior Nicholas Golebiowski at 16th (25:17.1). 
 

Butler finished second, the Bulldogs’ best finish in five years as a BIG EAST member, with 54 points.  Butler had three runners in the top 10.  Freshman Barry Keane finished fifth in a time of 24:52.5.  Senior Matt Lumbar was sixth at 24:55.4 and junior Johnny Leverenz was 10th at 25:04.5.

Villanova was a close third with 57 points.  In addition to Marston’s runner-up finish, sophomore Casey Comber was third with a time of 24:40.6.  Classmate Paul Power was ninth at 25:01.6.

Providence took fourth place with 94 points.  The Friars’ top performer was sophomore Marcus Karamanolis who was 11th with a time of 25:04.6.  Marquette was fifth with 129 points.  The Golden Eagles had one top-10 finisher.  Sophomore Daniel Pederson was eighth (25:01.0).
 

In the women’s race, Villanova placed four runners among the top seven and finished with 39 points.  Junior Bella Burda, who finished ninth in last year’s Championship, finished third in a time of 20:19.4.  The Wildcats, who are ranked 15th nationally, took the fifth, sixth and seventh places with junior Nicole Hutchinson (20:38.7), freshman Lauren Ryan (20.44.1) and junior Kaley Ciluffo (20:49.7).

Providence was second with 46 points, despite having three runners among the top four individuals.  Rocha, who has finished second in the 2013 Championship that also was held at the Dannehl course, won comfortably over her teammate Ilarda.  Senior Millie Paladino was fourth with a time of 20:27. 

The next highest finisher not from Villanova or Providence was Xavier senior Madeline Britton who placed eighth with a time of 20:51.8.
Georgetown was third in the women’s team standings with 63 points.  The Hoyas were led by senior Josette Norris at 20:52.6 and had five more competitors finish 12th through 16th.

The Georgetown men’s coaching staff, led by head coach Brandon Bonsey, was named BIG EAST Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year.  The Villanova women’s staff, led by head coach Gina Procaccio, was named BIG EAST Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
