The top-seeded Hoyas punched their title game ticket for the fourth time with a 4-0 win over fourth-seeded Marquette. Georgetown’s fourth BIG EAST title game appearance also marks its second in a row. Georgetown won the BIG EAST Championship on its home turf in 2016, and fell in the final in 2014 to DePaul and 2012 to Marquette for a 1-2 record in the title game.
No. 2 Seed Butler 3, No. 3 Seed Providence 0
Second-seeded Butler returns to the BIG EAST title game for the second time in three seasons after totaling a 3-0 win over visiting third-seeded Providence. BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Paige Monaghan tallied a goal and assist on the night, helping on Caitlyn DiSarcina’s game-winning goal in the fifth minute before adding an insurance score in the second half. Julia Leonard also scored for the Bulldogs, who stretched their BIG EAST-leading unbeaten streak to 17 games, dating back to Aug. 24. Butler finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots and 5-4 lead in corners. BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year Shelby Hogan had four saves for the Friars, while Butler split time in the cage between Hannah Luedtke and Leonie Doege, with Luedtke registering four stops. Hannah McNulty led the Providence offense with a team-high three shots.
Butler advanced to the 2015 title game in Omaha, Neb., where it defeated Providence 1-0 for the school’s first BIG EAST title in any sport. The Bulldogs’ other two BIG EAST Championship appearances ended in the first round. Butler and Georgetown played to a scoreless double-overtime draw this season and have met just once in postseason play, with the Hoyas scoring a 4-0 win in last year’s first round.
