MBB Minute -- Villanova Rises To Win Battle 4 Atlantis
The fifth-ranked Villanova Wildcats won their fifth in-season November tournament in as many years when they captured the Battle 4 Atlantis crown on Friday with a 64-50 win over Northern Iowa.
Mikal Bridges led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Jalen Brunson, who was named Tournament MVP, had 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Brunson averaged 19.7 ppg for the three games. Villanova is 6-0.
Seton Hall (5-1) won the third-place game in the NIT Tip-Off, knocking off Vanderbilt 72-59. Desi Rodriguez scored a season-high 27 points and kept the Commodores scoreless for an 11-minute stretch midway through the contest. Angel Delgado added 15 points and eight rebounds.
Butler won a close one and DePaul lost a close one in the second round of the PK80. The Bulldogs edged Portland State 71-69. Tyler Wideman made 9-of-10 shots from the floor en route to 18 points and he had a game-high eight rebounds. Kelan Martin finished with 16 points and six boards.
DePaul lost 89-79 in overtime to Oregon. Marin Maric led four players in double figures with 22 points. Eli Cain added 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.
St. John’s and Xavier both lost their first games of the season. The Red Storm (5-1) dropped a 90-82 decision to Missouri in the second round of the Advocare Invitational despite 31 points and seven assists from Shamorie Ponds. Xavier (5-1) lost 102-86 to Arizona State in the title game of the Las Vegas Invitational. J.P. Macura notched a team-high 23 points.
Saturday’s three-game schedule does not include any tournament play. Creighton (4-1) hosts SIU-Edwardsville at 4:30 ET on FS2. Georgetown (3-0) plays at Richmond at 6 p.m. Providence (4-1) hosts Boston College at 8 p.m. on FS1.
BIG EAST teams are a combined 40-13 (.756) this season going into Saturday.
