Marquette rallied in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, then pushed past Eastern Illinois 86-83 Monday night. It was the third straight day that a BIG EAST team had played an overtime contest. Butler beat Ohio State on Sunday and DePaul lost to Oregon on Saturday.
For Marquette (4-2), Sam Hauser came to the rescue with a career-high 30 points and a game-high nine rebounds. He shot 10-of-15 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Hauser scored 17 points in the second half and five in the extra period. Andrew Rowsey added 16 points and Markus Howard had 14.
On a two-game Tuesday in the BIG EAST, Xavier’s battle with Baylor takes center stage. The 21st-ranked Musketeers host the No. 16 Bears. Xavier has won 33 straight non-conference home games at Cintas Center. Baylor won last year’s matchup 76-61 in Waco. Xavier’s Trevon Bluiett is second in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 21.3 ppg. FS1, with Tim Brando and Bill Raftery on the call, will televise at 6:30 p.m. ET.
The Baylor game is the first of six straight at home for Xavier. On Saturday, the Musketeers host No. 11 Cincinnati.
In Tuesday’s other game, also on FS1, Georgetown aims for a 5-0 start when it hosts Maine. The Hoyas have been led by the frontcourt duo of Jessie Govan and Marcus Derrickson. Govan ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 19.3 average and is first in rebounding at 12.3. Derrickson is averaging 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds.
BIG EAST teams are a combined 47-13 (.783) this season going into Tuesday’s games.
