Georgetown 3, Butler 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. – No. 1 seed Georgetown won its second consecutive BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship presented by Jeep on Sunday, topping No. 2 seed Butler 3-0 at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas earn the BIG EAST’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, marking their sixth consecutive trip to the national tournament and eighth overall. Georgetown senior midfielder Rachel Corboz was tabbed BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player while Elizabeth Wenger garnered Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors.
Georgetown struck early as Taylor Pak headed home a pass from Corboz just 6:14 into the contest. The Hoyas controlled the ball for much of the first frame, outshooting the Bulldogs 11-2, including 5-1 on target. GU extended its lead to 2-0 in the 51
st minute after Meaghan Nally took a long-distance strike that Butler goalkeeper Leonie Doege saved, but Caitlin Farrell was in the right spot to take the rebound and kick it into the net for her eighth score of the season. The score marked the first time in 2017 Butler allowed an opponent to score multiple goals as the Bulldogs entered the contest with the top goals against average in Division I at 0.197.
The Hoyas added to their lead when Corboz intercepted a kick by the Butler keeper in the 88
th minute to score her ninth goal of the season. GU maintained its 3-0 lead until the final buzzer, dealing Butler just its second loss of 2017 and first since Aug. 20. Georgetown finished with a 22-3 advantage in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks. GU’s Arielle Schechtman earned her NCAA-leading 16
th shutout of the season, making one save. Butler split time in the cage between starter Hannah Luedtke and Doege, who combined for eight saves.
Wenger, Corboz, Pak and Schechtman were joined on the All-Tournament Team by Butler’s Annika Schmidt, Julia Leonard and Shannon McDevitt. Providence added Hannah McNulty and Katie Day, while Marquette saw Eli Beard and Carrie Madden honored.
The NCAA Women’s Soccer Selection show will stream live on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 6, at 4:30 p.m. ET. Georgetown, which advanced to the College Cup in 2016, will learn its opponent then, while Butler and the rest of the BIG EAST lineup eye at-large selections. The Bulldogs show a 13-2-5 overall record and have been ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Poll for three consecutive weeks, currently standing at No. 20.
