NEW YORK – The NCAA Volleyball Championship First Rounds continues on Friday with the first set of games finished up last night. Friday is the first day of NCAA play for Creighton and Marquette, who will begin their quest to Kansas City where the 2017 NCAA Volleyball final four will be held.
The Golden Eagles (22-9) are in action first with a 5 p.m. ET match set against in-state rival Wisconsin (20-9) in Ames, Iowa at Hilton Coliseum. The Golden Eagles and Badgers will meet for the second time this season. Wisconsin won the first meeting, 3-1. The winner will play the winner of host-school Iowa State vs. Princeton. Iowa State is the overall No. 14 seed and is ranked 22nd nationally in the AVCA poll. Wisconsin is ranked 11th nationally. Marquette (is making its seventh-straight appearance in the tournament. Marquette last advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015 after defeating Northern Iowa in five sets before falling to two-seed Minnesota in straight sets.
No. 9 seed Creighton’s first round opponent will be Coastal Carolina. The Bluejays (25-6) are hosting this year’s first and second rounds at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha. The match between Creighton and Coastal Carolina (20-7) will take place at 8 p.m. ET, following Missouri State vs. Michigan State. Creighton (25-6) is ranked 15th nationally in the AVCA poll. Michigan State is ranked 12th and Missouri State is 25th. Creighton advanced to the Regional Final in 2016, becoming the first BIG EAST team in history to advance that far.
