MBB Minute -- BIG EAST Teams Compile 7-1 Saturday
BIG EAST teams won seven of eight games on Saturday to improve the league’s non-conference record to 76-18 (.809), the best mark since 1988-89 (113-23, .831). Four of the winning teams placed five players in double figures.
Marquette (7-3) won at in-state rival Wisconsin 82-63 behind guards Andrew Rowsey and Markus Howard. Rowsey made 5-of-6 3-pointers and finished with 24 points. Howard finished with 23 points and seven rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 14-of-22 (.636) from beyond the arc.
Creighton also defeated an in-state rival, rallying in the second half to beat Nebraska 75-65. It was the Bluejays’ seventh straight win in the series. Marcus Foster led Creighton (7-2) with 19 points. Ronnie Harrell Jr. and Martin Krampelj each posted double-doubles. Harrell Jr. had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Krampelj had 10 points and 11 boards.
No. 19 Seton Hall (8-1) placed all five starters in double figures and held VCU scoreless for six minutes in the first half of a 90-67 win in the Never Forget Classic at Prudential Center. Desi Rodriguez had 17 points and seven rebounds while Angel Delgado posted his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Butler also had five players in double figures in a 95-67 win over visiting Youngstown State. The Bulldogs (8-2) shot 59 percent from the field and were led by Kamar Baldwin’s 19 points. Paul Jorgensen and Kelan Martin each added 15 points.
Georgetown remained unbeaten (8-0) with an 83-74 victory over North Carolina A&T. Jessie Govan continued his productive play with 22 points and 15 rebounds and his sixth double-double of the season. The junior center helped the Hoyas score 52 points in the paint.
Max Strus and Eli Cain led DePaul (5-4) to a 65-55 road victory against Illinois-Chicago. Strus had 24 points, seven assists and three steals. Cain finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals.
No. 13 Xavier (9-1) scored 31 points in the first eight minutes of a 96-69 win over Colorado. Trevon Bluiett registered 25 points and seven rebounds. J.P. Macura added 17 points. The Musketeers, who also placed five players in double figures, shot 60.7 percent from the field.
Providence was the lone BIG EAST team to taste defeat, losing 72-63 at Massachusetts. Rodney Bullock produced team highs of 15 points and nine rebounds. The Friars (7-3) were outshot from the floor 56.3 percent to 40.4 percent.
No. 4 Villanova is the only BIG EAST team in action on Sunday, hosting La Salle at 1 p.m. on FSI. The Wildcats (9-0) have won 14 of the last 15 meetings in the series.
