AUSTIN, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the 2017 Academic All-America Soccer Women's Teams on Thursday which included four honorees from BIG EAST programs. Xavier led the league with two selections, including First Team performer Tori Doss. Fellow Musketeer Carly Alfano was named to the Second Team, along with DePaul’s Elizabeth Endy. Providence’s Kristin Hayman rounded out the honorees with a Third Team certificate.
Xavier is one of only three schools to have multiple student-athletes honored on this year's women's soccer team, joined by the United States Naval Academy and West Virginia with two each. It's the first time in Xavier women's soccer program history to have multiple student-athletes earn the honor, and the first time the Musketeers have had a first or second team honoree. This year's honors are the first for the program since Marla Schuerman earned a spot on the 1992 Women's At-Large Third Team, the only previous time a Xavier women's soccer player has been honored.
During her time at Xavier Doss posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.98 in her undergraduate studies and graduated last May with a double major in Biology and Chemistry. She deferred her enrollment in medical school at Ohio State to play a fifth year at Xavier. In that year, Doss helped lead the Musketeers to the program's first conference tournament appearance since 2003 and earned BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team honors. Doss led the 2017 squad on offense during conference play, tallying a team-high seven points, matching Sydney Schembri for team-high in conference play with three goals, and picking up an assist.
Currently in her senior year, Alfano has posted a perfect grade point average of 4.00 while studying Biology, with double minors in Chemistry and Deaf Studies. The native of Belle River, Ontario, Canada, intends to pursue medical school after graduation. On the field, Alfano led the 2017 Musketeers in minutes played with over 1800 for the season, anchoring the Xavier defense as middle back. The Xavier backline held all-nine BIG EAST opponents to one goal or fewer during the conference regular season, helping earn the program's first BIG EAST Championship bid since joining the conference and the first post-season appearances since 2003. All told, Xavier's defense forced four shutouts on the season.
Alfano's efforts earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Third Team for 2017.
Endy carries a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in accounting and finance. Upon graduation in June, Endy will begin her full-time career with Deloitte, based in Chicago, where she will work as a consultant for the accounting firm. On the field, Endy started all 19 games for the Blue Demons in 2017. She dished out two assists on the year while attempting one shot. As a defender, Endy led DePaul to seven shutouts on the season. Endy finished her Blue Demon career sixth all-time in matches played (79) and second in all-time career starts (79), never having missed a match in her four seasons with DePaul.??
Hayman, a biology major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA and a two-year member of the PC women’s soccer program, has excelled in the classroom and on the field. She has seen action in 34 games as a Friar and registered three points on one goal and one assist. In 2017, the midfielder helped the Friars to a 10-8-2 record and the team’s fourth-consecutive BIG EAST Championship appearance.
Thirty of the 33 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 19 student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.96.
