MBB Minute -- Butler Moves Into Second Place With 110-Point Effort
Butler moved into second place in the BIG EAST standings after taking down St. John’s, while Creighton and Xavier both lost on the road on a Wednesday night that included some gaudy offensive numbers.
The Bulldogs shot 57.6 percent from the field and outscored St. John’s 110-86 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The winning point total was the most scored by Butler in its four seasons in the BIG EAST. Andrew Chrabascz and Avery Woodson each scored 20 points for the Bulldogs. Kelan Martin added 19 points and nine rebounds. Butler connected on 13-of-26 from 3-point range. St. John’s got 53 points from guards Federico Mussini (20), Shamorie Ponds (18) and Marcus LoVett (15). Butler is 20-6 overall and 9-5 in BIG EAST play. St. John’s is 12-15 overall and 6-8 in the league.
Seton Hall’s Khadeen Carrington tied the scoring high for a Seton Hall player in a BIG EAST game with 41 points in the Pirates’ 87-81 win over No. 20/22 Creighton. Amazingly, he scored 10 points in the final 41 seconds of the game. Carrington also had seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Angel Delgado produced his 20
th double-double of the season with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Marcus Foster led the Bluejays with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists. Seton Hall improved to 16-9 overall and 6-7 in the BIG EAST, while Creighton fell to 21-5 and 8-5.
Providence shot 64.5 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from Xavier in a 75-63 victory. The Friars’ Kyron Cartwright posted 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Rodney Bullock helped with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Xavier played without Trevon Bluiett, who is nursing an ankle injury. RaShid Gaston led the Musketeers with 19 points and 14 rebounds. J.P. Macura had 17 points. The Friars moved to 16-11 overall and 6-8 in the BIG EAST. Xavier is 18-8 and 8-5.
BIG EAST play resumes on Saturday with Villanova visiting Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m. ET on FOX and Xavier traveling to Marquette for an 8 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network.
