STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – After the first day of the 2017 BIG EAST Track & Field Championships Presented by Jeep, both the Marquette men and women are in the lead with 81.5 points on the women’s side and 50.0 points on the men’s side.
 
On the women’s side, Villanova is in second with 50.5 points, while St. John’s is in third with 33 points. For the men, Villanova is also behind Marquette with 42 points. Butler is in third with 39 points.  Finals for Friday included the pole vault, weight throw and long jump, 5,000-meter run, Distance Medley Relay and women’s pentathlon.
 
St. John’s junior Nyla Woods was the first medal of the day, as she defended her BIG EAST weight throw title. Her throw was 1.79 meters further than second place Monica Voudrie from Marquette (16.56 meters). The Golden Eagles also took third place on the medal stand with Keely Knobbe (15.73 meters).
 
The women’s pentathlon also had a repeat winner as Marquette sophomore Monique Felix held onto her league title with a point total of 3,554. Felix won the 60-meter hurdles (9.14 seconds) and the long jump (5.61 meters) within the event. Her long jump St. John’s Julia Schwan finished second with 3,216 points and Villanova’s Sofia Calabrese finished third with 3,195 points.
 
Golden Eagle Terica Harris won the women’s long jump title for Marquette with a distance of 5.97 meters. Last year’s champion, Anointing Onuoha from St. John’s came in second with a distance of 5.75 meters. DePaul’s Jade Nolan came in third place with a distance of 5.64 meters.
 
The women’s pole vault was won by Villanova’s Adeline Scelzi, who reached 3.60 meters. Marquette’s Gemma Tedeschi came in second and made the same height of 3.60 meters. Villanova’s Jessica Lee came in third with a height of 3.50 meters.
 
Butler’s Olivia Pratt won the 5,000 meter title with a 16:15.86 finish. Burda Bella of Villanova came in second 6:19.40, while Brittney Feivor of Marquette came in third at 16:26.32.
 
Villanova closed out the women’s portion of the event with a gold medal in the distance medley relay as Siofra Cleirigh Buttner, McKenna Keegan, Keley Ciluffo and Nicole Hutchinson crossed the tape first at 11:01.14, which qualifies as an NCAA B cut. Providence’s Abbey Wheeler, Molly Keating, Alex DeCicco and Brianna Ilarda finished second with a time of 11:37.65. Georgetown came in third with a time of 11:46.80. The Hoyas squad was made up of Aleta Looker, Carey Celata, Jocelyn Hubbard and Margie Cullen.
 
Marquette held on to their recent dominance in the men’s pole vault, winning the event for the third straight year. Marquette senior William Ford won the pole vault title with a height of 4.60 meters. Villanova placed second and third on the podium with James Deutemeyer and Thomas Conboy, respectively. The pair of Wildcats’ each also reached the 4.60 meter height, but in more attempts.
 
DePaul’s Trevor Kintyhtt won his third BIG EAST title in the weight throw, throwing a distance of 19.83 to lead the podium. Kintyhtt  is the first Blue Demon to win the same event three times in the BIG EAST meet. Marquette finished second and third as Terrance Howard threw 18.34 meters and Joel McBride finished with 17.66 meters.
 
Zachary Polk of Xavier defended his title in the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.49 meters, 0.31 meters further than his winning jump in 2016. He was joined on the podium by Marquette’s Dwayne Dash (7.16 meters) and Butler’s Sam Robinson (6.94 meters).
 
Butler’s Erik Peterson won the men’s 5,000-meter title crossing the tape at 4:14.59. Villanova’s Andrew Marston came in second at 14:17.37, while Providence’s Hugh Armstrong finished at 14:24.32 for third.
 
To close out the men’s events on the track, Villanova’s squad of Casey Comber, Konrad Bayer, Elliot Slade and Logan Wetzel won the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:00.07. Georgetown (Jack Van Scoter, Nate Gordon, Spencer Brown and Jonathan Green) came in second, while Butler came in third (Johnny Leverenz, Graham Stecz, Evan Johnson, Euan Makepeace).
