#BIGEASTmlax Minute – Back In Action For A Seven Game Weekend
NEW YORK – All six BIG EAST men’s lacrosse teams had a week of rest as none played midweek games. Four of the six teams are at home this weekend.
Denver remains No. 1 in both the coaches and media polls, although the Pioneers are tied with Maryland in the Inside Lacrosse poll. Denver (2-0) continues on its current six-game home stand hosting Cleveland State this weekend. Saturday’s contest is part of the Faceoff Classic. 2017 is Canisius’ first season of competition. The head coach is former DU assistant and son-in-law of head coach Bill Tierney, Dylan Sheridan. Denver will host Canisius on Sunday.
No. 19/16 Marquette (1-0) is on the road at No. 15/14 Richmond looking for win No. 2 of the season in the third top 20 match up of the year for the BIG EAST. The contest got moved up to 11 a.m. due to weather. The Spiders are 3-0, Marquette is coming off a 17-1 win at Jacksonville. MU has a 2-0 series lead over Richmond.
Villanova (0-2) will also play at 11 a.m. as the Wildcats’ host No. 9/10 Penn State at Villanova Stadium. It is the 23rd meeting between these two teams. Penn State holds the all-time record 16-6, but Villanova has won the last three meetings, two at PSU and one at home. Penn State is the second consecutive top 10 team Villanova has hosted.
Georgetown (0-2) also hosts a ranked team in No. 13/12 Towson for the Hoyas’ home-opener at 12 p.m. Georgetown is looking to rebound off a l6-10 loss to No. 4 Notre Dame in Texas, Peter Conley had five goals, Nick Marrocco had 15 saves against the Irish.
Providence (2-1) hosts Vermont after a thrilling 8-7 win over Bryant last Saturday. The two teams have met 20 times in a series dating back to 1983. Vermont leads the series 12-8, but the Friars defeated the Catamounts 11-8 in 2016.
St. John’s will be on the road on Saturday for the Red Storm’s first meeting against High Point. Despite a quick start that saw St. John’s up 4-0 against Stony Brook last weekend, the Red Storm lost 14-5. SJU is looking to rebound from its 0-2 start.
