NEW YORK – BIG EAST men’s lacrosse went 3-4 over the weekend highlighted by a third consecutive win by the Providence Friars and win No. 100 for head coach Bill Tierney at Denver.
 
No. 1 Denver 12, Canisius 0
Top-ranked Denver recorded its first shutout in D1 history on Sunday with a 12-0 victory over Canisius in front of the 17th-straight sellout at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The victory was also win No. 100 for head coach Bill Tierney at Denver in jut 128 games. Tierney became the first coach in NCAA Division-I history to reach 100 career wins in 140 career games at two different institutions. Junior Colton McCaffrey and 2016 Tewaaraton Finalist Connor Cannizzaro both finished with four points in spearheading Denver's (4-0) attack as McCaffrey tallied a pair of goals and assists while Cannizzaro ended with one goal and three helpers. Sophomore Alex Ready took the win for the Pioneers, finishing with five saves and two ground balls before coming off the field after 56:26 of play.

No. 1 Denver 19, Cleveland State 6
Fourteen different goal scorers combined for 19 goals in Denver’s win over Cleveland State in the first of DU’s two games in the Face Off Classic.  Connor Cannizzaro and freshman Ethan Walker led the Pioneers in points on Saturday afternoon with five apiece. Walker stretched his hat trick streak to three to go along with two assists. Cannizzaro finished with two goals and three assists, while sophomore Austin French had four points on two goals and two helpers.

Providence 8, Vermont 6
The Friars extended their winning streak to three games with a home win over the visiting Catamounts. The Friar defense has been stout all season, holding each of its four opponents to single-digit goals, for an average of just 6.0 goals per game. Offensively, the Friars were led by Brendan Kearns and Nick Hatzipetrakos. Both players recorded hat tricks on the afternoon en route to the 8-6 victory. Kearns scored three goals in a row bringing PC behind a goal, to eventually being up by a goal, 4-3. From there, the Friars held on to the lead. Tate Boyce marked eight saves.

High Point 15, St. John’s 6
Despite scoring four of the game’s first five goals, St. John’s fell to High Point on the road on Saturday afternoon in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Freshman attackman Joe Madsen scored the first two goals of his career in the first quarter of Saturday’s contest at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C. As has been the norm early in this 2017 campaign, St. John’s opened up the game with a 4-1 lead at the end of the opening frame. The Johnnies improved its first quarter goal differential to +5 on the year. High Point answered this early St. John’s run with nine unanswered goals to begin the second half. The Panthers would not look back, winning the game 15-6.

No. 15/14 Richmond 9, No. 19/16 Marquette 2
Marquette struggled to a 9-2 loss at No. 15/14 Richmond on Saturday at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia.nJunior goalie Cole Blazer made a career-best 15 saves, but the Golden Eagles (1-1) were able to connect on only two of their 26 shots as Richmond’s Benny Pugh made 16 saves. Seniors Grant Preisler and Ryan McNamara scored the lone goals for Marquette on the day. Ryan Lee posted his fourth hat trick of the season for the Spiders (4-0) and also added a pair of assists, while Teddy Hatfield posted two goals and an assist.

No. 13/12 Towson 11, Georgetown 10
Georgetown dropped its 2home opener with a thrilling 11-10 setback to No. 13/12 Towson on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. The Hoyas rallied from a 10-5 halftime deficit to pull within one in the final frame but could not complete the comeback attempt. Sophomore Daniel had a career game for the Hoyas (0-3) in the loss. The sophomore standout recorded a career-high, and game-best, six goals to lead the Blue & Gray's upset attempt. Peter Conley continued his scoring spree with a pair of goals and two assists. In the third and fourth quarters, Georgetown scored five goals to Towson’s one, as the Hoyas fell just short of a full comeback.

No. 9/10 Penn State 17, Villanova 12
A six-goal run by Penn State to bridge the first and second quarters made the difference as Villanova (0-3) fell the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0) 17-12 on Saturday afternoon inside Villanova Stadium. Graduate student Jack Curran lead the Wildcats with five points on four goals and one assist.  Four goals tied his career high. The Wildcats had eight penalties during the contest, prior to this game Villanova had one had one all year.  Penn State scored on four of those extra man opportunities, two in the second quarter.
