A Pair of Seniors Secure #BIGEASTsb Weekly Awards
NEW YORK – Seton Hall senior Lauren Fischer was honored as BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week, while St. John senior Tori Free was named Pitcher of the Week. Both seniors helped their respective teams to a 3-2 mark this past weekend.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Lauren Fischer, Seton Hall, Sr., P/UT
The veteran hit .500 (6-for-12) in a 3-2 week for The Hall, one that included the first two wins over ACC foes for the program since 2013. Offensively, Fischer added four runs scored, two doubles and two RBI while drawing five walks and stealing a base. In Seton Hall’s 4-2 win Virginia, the senior recorded two walks, one hit and one run. She also had a pair of solid performances in the circle; tossing a five-inning complete game one-hitter against Coppin State and notching a three-inning save to hold off Virginia Tech.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Tori Free, St. John’s, Sr.
Free guided St. John’s pitching with a dominant 0.00 ERA over 11.0 innings. Making three appearances in the circle, she fanned 15 batters and only allowed one extra-base hit. Free’s performance was highlighted by a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts against Bethune-Cookman.
Weekly Honor Roll
Mallory Belknap, Georgetown, So., INF/OF
Belknap paced Georgetown to a 3-2 weekend as she registered a .588 batting average. Over five games, the sophomore collected 10 hits, including one double as well as three walks and four RBI.
Noelle Holiday, Georgetown, Fr., 1B
Appearing in five games for the Hoyas, Holiday recorded a .375 batting average and five RBI. She also dealt four runs over six hits, including a double against Loyola.
Gretchen Bowie, St. John’s, UT
The freshman had a significant impact in the St. John’s win over Cal State Fullerton as she delivered a go-ahead two-run double with runners on first and second. Overall, she went 5-for-16 with three RBIs and four runs.
Chrisa Head, Seton Hall, So., P/UT
The sophomore made two relief appearances against Virginia, not allowing an earned run over 6.0 innings. Overall, she struck out five while allowing only one run against the Hoos.
Alexis Walkden, Seton Hall, Jr., INF
Walkden slashed a .385 batting average, a .556 on-base percentage and an .846 slugging percentage on the week, totaling five hits that included three doubles and her 30
th career home run. Overall for the week the junior combined for scored six runs, drove in a pair and drew five walks against Virginia Tech, Virginia and Coppin State.
