Blue Demons and Bluejays earn large-margin first-round victories, while St. John’s and Villanova march on in WNIT.

For the first time since 2014, at least two BIG EAST teams have advanced to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Second Round as No. 7 seeds DePaul and Creighton won their respective tilts today. The Blue Demons topped 10th-seeded Northern Iowa 88-67 in Starkville, Miss., moving on to face second-seeded host Mississippi State on Sunday. The Bluejays dispatched 10th-seeded Toledo, 76-49, in Corvallis, Ore., to earn a date with second-seeded and host Oregon State on Sunday. Sunday tip times have yet to be announced. Fifth-seeded Marquette will look to make it three BIG EAST teams to the second round when the Golden Eagles face 12th-seeded Quinnipiac tomorrow in Coral Gables, Fla., at 1:30 p.m. (ET). WNIT Roundup
St. John’s and Villanova scored WNIT First Round victories on Friday evening, while Georgetown’s season came to a close with a 60-49 setback to Fordham. The Red Storm cruised by Sacred Heart in Queens, 72-43, and will host Harvard on Sunday in the second round at 2 p.m. (ET). Notable Performances
Tanita Allen was the star of the show for No. 19/19 DePaul today in Starkville, draining 9-of-11 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 from deep, scoring a game-high 25 points as the Blue Demons cruised past Northern Iowa. Marissa Janning sparked RV/RV Creighton to its first NCAA Tournament win since 2013, coming out firing and finishing with game highs of 19 points and four assists. Villanova was led by Alex Louin, who went for a game-high 18 points off 7-of-11 shooting, committing just one miscue in 34 minutes of play as the Wildcats edged Princeton in the WNIT. Akina Wellere and Jade Walker totaled matching game highs of 18 points to lead St. John’s to a large-margin win over Sacred Heart in the WNIT, while Dionna White and Dorothy Adomako contributed 17 points apiece in Georgetown’s WNIT setback to Fordham.
