Georgetown’s DeRenzi, St. John’s McAuliffe Named #BIGEASTbase Players of the Week
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Michael DeRenzi, Georgetown, Jr., OF (Mendham, N.J.)
In a 5-0 week for the Hoyas, DeRenzi led the Georgetown offense with three multi-hit efforts and a .421 batting average (8-for-19). DeRenzi went 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI at Navy. He scored two runs at George Washington on Monday and closed the week going 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBI and a run scored against Chicago State. He was the first Hoya with two triples in a game since 2011. Against Ball State, he had two hits and scored two runs. In four of the five games, DeRenzi stole a base. He led the BIG EAST for the week in runs (9), hits (8), triples (3), total bases (14) and stolen bases (4).
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Ryan McAuliffe, St. John’s, Sr., RHP (Starter) (North Reading, Mass.)
The St. John’s starter earned the win behind nine hits from the Red Storm offense as McAuliffe went 7.0 innings and allowed just two hits and one run in a 9-1 win for the senior pitcher. The one run was marked as unearned for the starter who allowed no extra base hits and just two walks with seven strikeouts.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Jimmy Swad, Georgetown, Jr., RHP (Washington, D.C.)
Made three appearances and recorded three saves in Georgetown’s perfect 5-0 week. He pitched three innings with five strikeouts and no hits.
Josh Shaw, St. John’s, So., 2B/3B (Wayne, N.J.)
In a 3-1 week for the Red Storm, Shaw hit .444 (8-for-18) with three runs, seven RBI and a home run. SJU defeated No. 7/13 North Carolina on March 1. Shaw had an RBI and a run in the win.
Zach Prendergast, Sr., RHP (Horsham, Pa.)
Prendergast went longer than any other SHU starter this season with 7.0 innings of work. He got the win and posted a 2.57 ERA for the day with four strikeouts.
Todd Czinege, Villanova, Sr., 2B (Overland Park, Kansas)
Helped the Wildcats to their first win of the season against Central Michigan with a two-out double in the ninth to give VU insurance runs to clinch the victory. He averaged .333 with 13 hits, two RBI, a double and four runs.
Joe Gellenbeck, Xavier, Sr., OF (Lebanon, Ohio)
Hit .364 with two homers in a weekend series at Charlotte. He helped XU to a 7-6 win in the Sunday finale with his two HRs. Had a hit in all three games and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
