Denver’s Baptiste, Walker And Providence’s Boyce Named #BIGEASTmlax Players of the Week
NEW YORK – Denver junior Trevor Baptiste earned his first Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after recording a hat trick plus an assist to go along with a 23-of-28 performance at the faceoff X on Sunday against a ranked league opponent, Villanova. Teammate Ethan Walker earned his fourth Freshman of the Week honor; while Providence goalie Tate Boyce was awarded Defensive Player of the Week honors.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Trevor Baptiste, Denver, Jr., FOGO (Denville, N.J.)
Trevor Baptiste was once again super for the Denver Pioneers, this time not only was he 23-for-28 from the faceoff X against the then-No. 18 ranked Villanova Wildcats, he also scored his first career hat trick off those wins. Baptiste recorded four points on the day with an assist to go along with his three goals. Baptiste scored the 15th, 14th and 8th goals for the Pios. His assist was Denver’s fourth goal, as the Pios took a 4-1 lead. Additionally, Baptiste picked up 17 ground balls.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Tate Boyce, Providence, So., GK (Matthews, N.C.)
Providence recorded its fourth-straight win on Saturday with a 13-7 victory over Georgetown. It was the first win over the Hoyas for the Friars since the series started in 1987 (the second ever). Boyce was instrumental between the pipes with 17 saves. Seven of his saves were in the fourth quarter as Georgetown attempted to even the score. Boyce also picked up four ground balls. Boyce is second in the conference in saves per game (10.45) and has a .618 save percentage with 6.64 goals against average.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ethan Walker, Denver, Fr., A (Peterborough, Ontario)
For the fourth time this season, Ethan Walker was named Freshman of the Week. It was his second consecutive week with the honor. Walker scored twice with three assists to lead Denver in points for the fifth time this season with five in the win against No. 18 Villanova.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Austin McDonald, Georgetown, So., A (Olney, Md.)
McDonald recorded his first career hat trick in Georgetown’s 13-7 loss to Providence.
Tanner Thomson, Marquette, So. M (Toronto, Ont.)
Thomson scored six goals in Marquette’s 17-9 rout of St. John’s. Six goals is the most scored in a league game so far this season and ties Georgetown’s Daniel Bucaro who accomplished the feat twice in non-conference play.
Zachary Melillo, Marquette, Jr., FO (Warren, N.J.)
Went 19-of-25 on faceoffs, including 11-for-11 in the second half Marquette made its comeback against St. John’s to eventually win 17-9.
Brendan Kearns, Providence, So., A (Wantaugh, N.Y.)
Kearns had five points on four goals and an assist in the Friars’ 13-7 win over Georgetown on Saturday.
Joe Madsen, St. John’s, Fr., A (Locust Valley, N.Y.)
Madsen did all he could in the Red Storm’s game at Marquette, scoring four goals on just five shots. St. John’s lost 17-9.
