Villanova 2, Lafayette 0
Game 1: 4-0
Game 2: 6-2

Villanova (21-13) was victorious in a doubleheader sweep of the Lafayette Leopards (4-18) on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats won by scores of 4-0 and 6-2. In game one, Lauren Herschberg opened with a solo home run to center field to put Villanova ahead 1-0. The Wildcats added three more runs in the top of the third inning. Brette Lawrence (W, 13-7) earned the win on the mound for the Wildcats. She pitched five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Lawrence also struck out four batters on the day. In the second game, Villanova raced out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning. Lafayette got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning, but Villanova added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning.

DePaul 5, Illinois 1
DePaul softball defeated Illinois State 5-1 on Wednesday evening at Marian Kneer Stadium. DePaul’s (19-16, 4-4 BIG EAST) Morgan Greenwood went 2-for-2 at the plate and added two runs. Megan Leyva also contributed two hits. Kennedy Garcia earned her eighth win in the circle for the Blue Demons. She struck out one and allowed one earned run on four hits in the 18 batters she faced. The Blue Demons notched two runs in the top of the second, but Illinois State got on board in the third inning after Riley Hale hit a solo shot over the left field fence. Alysia Rodriguez put DePaul up 3-1 with a leadoff homer over center field in the top of the fourth. Greenwood added her second run of the game that very inning after plating home off a RBI single from Haydn Christensen with two outs. The Blue Demons scored their final run in the sixth. With two outs and Micah Fitzgerald on first and Viles on second, the two stole their next respective bases, Viles being home.

Iona 3, St. John’s 1
A strong performance from sophomore right-hander Madison Morris was not enough to keep St. John's (19-13, 7-2 BIG EAST) from dropping a 3-1 decision to Iona on Wednesday at Donald E. Walsh Field. Leading at the plate for the Johnnies was freshman Marissa Rizzi, who smashed her first-career home run of the season to score the Johnnies' only run of the afternoon. Christina Melendez, Krystal Puga and Savannah Warren accounted for the other three Red Storm hits. Senior Grace Kramer (4-4) took the loss after surrendering three runs in the sixth. Morris was dominant in her sixth start in the circle, striking out four Gaels and allowing only one hit over four scoreless frames.

Mount St. Mary’s 6, Georgetown 2
Georgetown fell to Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday in a midweek matchup by a score of 6-2. With the loss, the Hoyas fell to 11-24 and Mount St. Mary’s improved to 13-20. Casey Kozak started on the mound for GU and went four innings while giving up four runs on two hits. Katie Vannicola came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and gave up two runs on two hits. The Blue & Gray outhit the Mountaineers by a count of 11-4, but three well-timed home runs for Mount St. Mary’s proved to be the difference.
