Butler's Tibbets Takes Individual Crown

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – After finishing second in each of the past three years, Georgetown led from start to finish and won the 2017 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.  The Hoyas, who captured their first women’s golf championship in program history, showed to be the deepest team in the field, placing three golfers in the top five places.  Butler sophomore Lauren Tibbets shot the low rounds of the day on Saturday and Sunday and won the individual title with a two-over-par 218.

Georgetown took first place with a team score of 896, 32 over par.  The Hoyas began the final round with an eight-stroke lead over Butler and edged the Bulldogs on Sunday by one stroke to win by nine.  Butler finished at 905 (+41).  St. John’s took third place with a team score of 924 (+60) followed by Xavier in fourth at 933 (+69), Seton Hall in fifth at 936 (+72) and Creighton in sixth at 966 (+102).

As the team winner of the BIG EAST Championship, Georgetown earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.

“I’m really proud of how our team dug down deep all three days,” said Georgetown coach Katie Brophy.  “It’s a challenge to play from the lead position each day, but we really focused on what we needed to focus on.  I’m really looking forward to playing in NCAA Regionals.”

Tibbets shot a two-under-par 70 in the final round.  The sophomore carded a 71 in the second round after a 77 in the first round.  Georgetown junior Lauren Gros and Seton Hall junior Cassie Pantelas tied for second place with a six-over-par 222, four strokes behind Tibbets.  Gros shot a 72 in the final round, while Pantelas shot a 77.

Georgetown sophomore Alexa Popowitz finished fourth with a seven-over-par 223.  Teammate Jacquelyn Eleey tied for fifth with Butler’s Abigail Gleixner at 224, eight over par.   Eleey and Gleixner are juniors.
