NEW YORK – The bracket for the 2017 BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship presented by Jeep was set on Saturday, with back-to-back tourney champion Florida earning the top seed for a third consecutive year. Joining the Gators are second-seeded Georgetown, third-seeded Denver and fourth-seeded Temple. Villanova is serving as host of the conference tournament, set for May 4 and 6 at Villanova Stadium.
No. 2/2 Florida (15-2, 9-0 BIG EAST) topped NR/RV Georgetown on Saturday, 15-3, to lock up the No. 1 seed, and will face fourth-seeded Temple (13-4, 6-3) in Thursday’s first semifinal at 4:30 p.m. (ET). The second-seeded Hoyas (9-8, 7-2) will square off with No. 3 seed Denver (13-3, 7-2) in the second semi at 7 p.m., with both games streaming on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Thursday’s winners will meet on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., with that game airing live on FS2. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the league’s automatic berth into the 26-team NCAA Tournament.
No. 2/2 Florida and NR/RV Temple met just a week ago in Philadelphia, with the Gators scoring a 15-5 victory as Sammi Burgess posted five points off four goals and an assist. The Gators and Owls met in last year’s BIG EAST Championship title game, with Florida winning their second consecutive league crown with a 16-4 victory.
NR/RV Georgetown and No. 16/16 Denver also squared off last Saturday, with the Hoyas upsetting then-No. 13/13 Denver, 9-7, in Washington, D.C. Francesca Whitehurst had a goal and four dishes in the win. The Hoyas are making their 11
th consecutive trip to the BIG EAST Championship, while Denver is in the midst of its first season as an affiliate member of the BIG EAST Conference. Georgetown won the tournament in 2010 and has five runner-up showings to its credit.
