CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – After the first round of play at the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep in sunny but windy conditions, the top six teams are separated by only four strokes with DePaul and Georgetown tied for first place. The Championship is being played at the Callawassie Island Golf Club for the fourth straight year.
DePaul and Georgetown both compiled team scores of 14-over-par 302. Marquette, Seton Hall and Xavier are tied for third place two strokes back at 304 (+16). Butler is sixth at 305 (+17).
The second round of the 54-hole tournament begins Monday at 8 a.m. ET. The BIG EAST team winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual.
Butler senior Joey Arcuri is the individual leader after shooting a two-under-par 70. He made 16 pars, two birdies and no bogeys and was the only player under par. Arcuri finished seventh in last year’s Championship.
Butler freshman Patrick Allgeier and Seton Hall sophomore Gen Nagai both shot even-par 72. Marquette freshman Matt Bachmann carded at 73 for fourth place. A six-way for fifth place at 74 exists among DePaul senior Jonathan Hewett, Georgetown sophomore Kevin Jackson, Georgetown junior Sam Madsen, St. John’s sophomore Andrew Yub Baek, Xavier senior Fox Morrissey and Xavier sophomore Eduardo Rivera.
Creighton is in seventh place with a team score of 316 (+28), followed by Villanova at 322 (+34) and St. John’s at 325 (+37). Creighton’s top performer was junior Trey Petitt, who carded a 75 and is tied for 11
th. Villanova’s top scorer was junior Andy Butler, who had a six-over-par 78. He is tied for 18
th.
