CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – After starting the day in a tie for first place, DePaul took sole ownership of the lead after two rounds of the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club. On a day that included morning showers and significant windy conditions, the Blue Demons gained a seven-stroke lead over second-place Seton Hall heading into Tuesday’s final round.
DePaul has a two-day score of 596, 27 over par. Seton Hall is second at 603. Marquette and Butler are tied for third at 613, 17 strokes behind DePaul. Georgetown is fifth at 616.
The third and final round begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. ET. The BIG EAST team winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual.
DePaul will be aiming for its first BIG EAST men’s golf title. Blue Demon coach Betty Kaufmann announced prior to the Championship that she will retire at the end of the season after 19 years as the leader of the program.
“The guys played very consistently, they were patient,” said Kaufmann. “You just have to trust your game. Three or four of our guys have played here for three and four years and they have families here to watch them. In the end, I just want them to have fun tomorrow.”
DePaul’s Jonathan Hewett tied the low score of the day with a two-under-par 70 to pull into a three-way tie for first place on the individual leaderboard with an even-par 144. He is tied with Butler’s Joey Arcuri, the first-round leader who carded a 74, and Marquette’s Matt Bachmann, who shot a one-under par 71 in the second round.
Butler’s Patrick Allgeier and Seton Hall’s Gen Nagai are tied for fourth at 145, one over par. Seton Hall’s Lloyd Jefferson Go, last year’s individual champion, matched Hewett with a 70 and moved into sixth place into with a 146, two over par.
Xavier is in sixth place with a two-day total of 619. After two rounds, the top Musketeer is Fox Morrissey, who is tied for eighth place with a six-over-par 150. He shot 76 in the second round.
Villanova’s top player in the second round was senior Lucas Trim, who carded a 73. His two-day total is a nine-over-par 153, which is tied for 10
th. Creighton’s Charlie Bolton also has a 153 after shooting a 75 in the second round. St. John’s was led by Andrew Yub Baek, who has 154 for the two days after carding an 80 in the second round. He is tied for 13
th.
