DePaul men win first-ever BIG EAST Outdoor Championship title, Marquette women repeat as champions.

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Marquette women successfully defended their outdoor track & field title with a score of 195 points; while the DePaul men won their first outdoor crown with 204 points at the 2017 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships Presented by Jeep.
 
 
Held at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium, Marquette’s win was helped by sophomore Monique Felix and sophomore Terica Harris who each won two events for the Golden Eagles. Felix, the Women’s High Point Performer of the Meet, won the high jump (1.70 meters) and heptathlon (5,196 points) and was runner-up in the triple jump. Harris, voted the Women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer, won the long jump (5.87 meters) and triple jump (12.27 meters). The trio of Felix, Harris and junior Maya Marion made up three of the top five point scorers of the meet, combining for 74.5 points.  Marion won the shot put (13.2 meters) and was runner-up in the discus throw.
 
Marquette won six events on the women’s side, the most the Golden Eagles have won in the championship. Head coach Bert Rogers and his staff were voted Coaching Staff of the Year for the second year in a row.
 
 
Runner-up on the women’s side was Villanova with five event wins and 176 points. Villanova junior Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner won two events for the Wildcats, the 1,500-meter run (2:07.45) and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay (3:44.34). Senior Angel Piccirillo also won two of the Wildcats’ five events, taking home gold in the 800-meter run (2:07.45) and 4x400-meter relay. Bella Burda won the 5,000-meter run for the Wildcats, taking home 10 points with a time of 17:51.92.
 
St. John’s finished third with 156 points and tied Marquette for most individual event wins with six. Junior Maya Stephens and senior Adriana Wright won three individual/relay events for the Red Storm, the most of all the competitors in the meet. Stephens was unanimously named the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet on the women’s side after winning the 200-meter (24.11), 400-meter (54.81) and the 4x100-meter relay (46.27) as the anchor leg. Wright won the 100-meter dash (11.92) and 100-meter hurdles (13.67) along with the 400-meter relay. St. John’s swept the podium in the 200-meter dash with Stephens, Christine Oguledo (24.51) and Denesha Ransome (24.52).
 
Repeat winners from the 2016 championship on the women’s side included Marion in the shot put, an event that she has won three-straight times, St. John’s thrower Nyla Woods in the hammer (53.79 meters), Villanova’s Caroline Hamilton in the javelin (44.51 meters) and Felix in the heptathlon.
 
Butler won two events with Allie Vogeler winning the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.19) in addition to Olivia Pratt’s Friday night 10K win. Georgetown won the 4x800-meter relay with Jocelyn Hubbard, Kennedy Weisner, Piper Donaghu and Emma Keenan finishing with a time of 8:55.61. The Hoyas have won the 3,200-meter relay three-straight times.
 
DePaul’s Corrine Franz won the discus event on Saturday with a throw of 40.59 meters.
 
In the men’s championship DePaul won a team-best seven event titles, becoming the 11th team to win seven or more individual/relay titles in the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship on the men’s side. The Blue Demons had won six in 2014, 2015 and 2016. DePaul head coach Dave Dopek and his staff was named Coaching Staff of the Year.
 
Senior Trevor Kintyhtt repeated as the Men’s Most Outstanding Field Performer, a unanimous selection by the head coaches, who could not cast ballots for their own student-athletes. Kintytt won the hammer throw (62.61 meters) and discus (49.44 meters).  Junior sprinter Sebastian Feyersinger was co-Men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer winning both the 200-meter (21.61) and 400-meter (47.45) dashes. Feyersinger was the 2015 400-meter BIG EAST Champion. In Saturday’s meet, he took back his title from the 2016 winner, Villanova’s Harry Purcell. Purcell was runner-up with a 47.57 finish.
 
The Blue Demons swept the podium in the men’s shot put as sophomore Kyle Hedge won gold with a throw of 16.45 meters. Runner-up was fellow sophomore Isaac Jimenez and Kinthytt came in third with a throw of 15.17 meters.
 
Brian Mada won the triple jump for DePaul for the third straight year. His winning jump was 14.87 meters.
 
Marquette came in second on the men’s side with a score of 183 points and two event wins. Villanova was third with four event wins and 138 points. Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel won two events for Villanova, the 1,500-meter run (3:52.00) and the 4x800-meter relay (7:37.94) as the anchor.
 
Georgetown’s Joseph White was named Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet with two event wins, the 800-meter run (1:52.83) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:15.63). White is a three-time champion in the 800 and was the anchor leg of the Hoyas’ championship relay squad.
 
Xavier’s 4x100-meter relay team became the first Musketeers to win a BIG EAST Outdoor meet title.  Ran by Chris Taylor, Zachary Polk, Matthew Bryant and Russell Platt, Xavier crossed the line in 41.79 seconds. DePaul finished second at 42.44 and Butler finished third with a time of 42.55 seconds. Polk won the men’s 100-meter dash for Xavier, as the Musketeers won their second gold of the championship. Polk was awarded the trophy for the Men’s High Point Performer of the meet with 28.5 points. Polk was also runner-up in the 200-meter dash and long jump.
 
The heptathlon and decathlon pole vault and the women’s high jump competed indoors due to weather.
