MU's Bachmann Wins Individual Crown

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Marquette overcame a 17-stroke deficit in the final round to capture the 2017 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep on a sunny and windy day at the Callawassie Golf Club.  The Golden Eagles edged runner-up Seton Hall by one stroke and third-place Georgetown by two strokes.

As the BIG EAST champion, Marquette earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.  Individually, Marquette freshman Matt Bachmann took first place with an even-par score of 216 (73-71-72) for the 54-hole event.  The men’s golf crown was Marquette’s second in three years.

Marquette posted a team score of 286 in the final round, easily the best round in the tournament for the Golden Eagles, who shot 304 in the first round and 309 in the second round.  Freshman Matt Murlick led the third-round charge with a three-under-par 69.  Bachmann and teammate Henry Klongland shot even-par 72.  Oliver Farrell supported the Marquette cause with a 73.

Bachmann’s final round included an eagle on the difficult par-5 6th hole and three birdies.  He began the day tied for first place with Butler’s Joey Arcuri and DePaul’s Jonathan Hewett at even-par 144.

Arcuri finished the Championship in a three-way tie for second place, two strokes behind Bachman at two-over-par 218.  Arcuri tied the Seton Hall duo of Lloyd Jefferson Go and Gen Nagai.  Go was last year’s individual champion.  Georgetown’s Cole Berman shot a 69 in the final round to jump to fifth place with a three-over-par 219.  Hewett finished sixth at 220, four over par.

“We talk a lot about fighting,” said Marquette head coach Steve Bailey, when addressing his team’s third-round rally.  “Go and out and control the things you can control.  Our guys went out and did it.  I’m just proud of their fight.”

Seton Hall posted a team total of 900 (304-299-297) for the three days.  The Pirates also saved their best for the third round, registering a team score of 297.  Georgetown had the best team score of the day with a 285 and finished at 901 (302-314-285), one stroke behind Seton Hall.  DePaul, the leader after two rounds, placed fourth at 908 (302-294-312).
