Georgetown's Alexa Popowitz Named Player Of The Year
NEW YORK – Georgetown’s Alexa Popowitz has been named BIG EAST Player of the Year in women’s golf in a vote of the conference’s head coaches. Xavier freshman Mikayla Fitzpatrick has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and league champion Georgetown won BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players, but Popowitz is considered a unanimous selection since she received all possible votes.
Popowitz, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., leads the Hoyas with a 75.07 stroke average. The sophomore posted three top-20 finishes in tournaments this spring, in addition to taking fourth place at the BIG EAST Championship last week. She was an All-BIG EAST First Team pick. Last year, Popowitz was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
Fitzpatrick became Xavier’s top player in her freshman season. She led the Musketeer squad with a 76.48 stroke average and was the only freshman to be named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Fitzpatrick, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., tied for 10th in the BIG EAST Championship. She had five top 25 finishes prior to the Championship.
The Georgetown coaching staff is led by head coach Katie Brophy, who is in her sixth season as the leader of the Hoya program. She guided the team to its first BIG EAST Championship title last week by nine strokes after three straight second-place finishes. The Hoyas begin play at the NCAA Regional in Lubbock, Texas, on May 7.
