Seton Hall’s Zach Prendergast, St. John’s Troy Dixon Earn #BIGEASTbase Weekly Accolades
NEW YORK – St. John’s senior catcher/DH Troy Dixon was named Player of the Week, while Pitcher of the Week honors were awarded to Zach Prendergast from Seton Hall. For the third time this season, pitchers highlighted the weekly awards, making up four of the five honor roll places, same as last week.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Troy Dixon, St. John’s, Sr., C (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.)
Senior catcher Troy Dixon helped nationally-ranked St. John’s pick up its third-straight BIG EAST series victory and register a 3-1 week with a .538 batting average (.454 in league only play) on seven hits in 13 at bats. Dixon registered four RBI, while three of his seven hits were for extra bases as Dixon registered two doubles and a home run. In the series opener on the road at Georgetown, hitting in the fourth spot in the order Dixon went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored, blasting a two-run home run to right center in a 7-1 victory for the Johnnies. On Saturday, despite a 15-4 loss, Dixon was one of the four runs and batted 1-for-2 with a walk from the No. 6 spot. Hitting sixth again on Sunday, Dixon went 2-for-5 with an RBI in a come-from-behind victory to win 9-8 in the 11th inning. Dixon’s RBI single in the ninth inning was the first run in a rally that erased a four-run deficit in the ninth to tie the game at 8-8.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Zach Prendergast, Seton Hall, Sr., RHP/Starter (Horsham, Pa.)
Senior Zach Prendergast pitched his first career complete-game shutout against the top team in the standings, Creighton, for a 1-0 win in the series closer. The righty scattered seven hits with one walk and struck out seven batters in the second game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, which happened to be Prendergast’s 22nd birthday. With the win, Prendergast improved to 6-2 on the season.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Ryan Pepiot, Butler, Fr., RHP/Starter (Westfield, Ind.)
Pitched 8.0 innings in a 4-1 win over Villanova allowing just five hits and one walk and fanning 11.
Michael Emodi, Creighton, RS-So., C (Omaha, Neb.)
Batted .364 (4-for-11) for another 2-1 series win for Creighton to stay atop the standings. He had a run, an RBI and a double. His one run was a big one, the game-winning home run to left center in the top of the ninth inning in the series opener at Seton Hall. His hit cleared the fence and clanked off the metal bleachers.
Rollie Lacy, Creighton, Jr., RHP/Starter (Minnestrista, Minn.)
Lacy pitched 7.1 innings in a 2-1 win at Seton Hall, clinching the series win. Lacy scattered three hits and one run with no extra base hits in 107 pitches, 10 strikeouts to post a 1.23 ERA for the outing.
Sean Mooney, St. John’s, Fr., RHP/Starter (Marmora, N.J.)
Mooney earned his sixth win on the mound with 8.0 innings pitched in a 7-1 win at Georgetown. He scattered three hits with two walks and six strikeouts for a 1.12 ERA. His only run allowed was a solo homer.
Hunter Schryver, Villanova, Sr., LHP/Starter (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)
Although he was credited with the 1-0 loss to Butler, Schryver continued his dominance on the mound for Villanova pitching 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts and 0.00 ERA.
