Butler scores a draw at No. 18 Notre Dame while Xavier’s Nate Lie earns career win No. 1.

The 2017 season got off to a good start for the Butler women's soccer team as the 'Dawgs traveled to #18 Notre Dame and walked away with a quality 0-0 double overtime tie. Butler has now reached double overtime in three of their last four season openers. Notre Dame had defeated Butler in the previous ten meetings. This result also goes down as the first tie against a ranked opponent since the 2014 season when BU tied #12 DePaul 2-2. Leonie Doege made four saves for the Bulldogs to keep the nationally ranked Irish off the board.

Xavier 3, Cleveland State 2
Nate Lie's tenure as head coach of Xavier women's soccer started off with a win, after the Musketeers topped Cleveland State, 3-2, at the XU Soccer Complex. After a scoreless first half, Xavier took a 3-0 lead in the second, but CSU scored a pair in response and had several dangerous chances at the equalizer in the closing minutes. Samantha Dewey scored a pair of goals while Sydney Schembri was credited with the game winner in the 72nd minute. Toni Bizzarro denied four shots in net.

St. John’s 3, La Salle 3 (2OT)
In a match that spanned more than six hours thanks to a lengthy weather delay midway through the first half, St. John’s opened the 2017 campaign with a 3-3 double-overtime draw at La Salle. The delay lasted 3:47 and came 32 minutes into the action. Allie Moar and Christina Bellero gave the Red Storm an early 2-0 advantage before the Explorers responded with back-to-back goals of their own. St. John’s regained the lead when redshirt freshman Zsani Kajan ripped her first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute, but LaSalle notched the equalizer in the 82nd to knot the score, 3-3. Jordan Kamp had seven saves for St. John’s.

#1 West Virginia 1, #5 Georgetown 0
The oppressive heat and humidity in the Nation's Capital weren't the only things the No. 5-ranked Georgetown women's soccer team had to contend with on Friday afternoon in its season opener at Shaw Field. In their first game of the season, the Hoyas were tasked with playing the No. 1 team in the country, West Virginia. Despite holding advantages in shots and corner kicks and maintaining control of possession for a larger margin of the game, the Hoyas could not capitalize as West Virginia scored in the 11th minute and beat GU 1-0. Arielle Schechtman made three saves and Caitlin Farrell had a game-high six shots.

#2 Stanford 4, Marquette 0
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Henry made a career-high nine saves in the match for the Golden Eagles (0-1), who nearly took the game’s first lead in the 26th minute on a penalty kick. Eli Beard’s bid for a PK was denied by Cardinal keeper Alison Jahansouz, with Stanford responding minutes later with what would be the game winner in the 36th minute. The Cardinal tacked on three more scores in the second half to pull away.

#23 Northwestern 1, DePaul 0
The Blue Demons held Northwestern scoreless until the final minute of the first half where Wildcat defender Kayla Sharples landed a one-timer into the back of the net.  The shot was set up with a corner kick from midfielder Marisa Viggiano.  Her touch was shot point blank by NU’s Grace Orndorff where the save by DePaul’s senior goalkeeper Lauren Frasca was deflected to the feet of Sharples and touched into the net. Northwestern, which outshot the Blue Demons 11-3 in the contest, had five shots in the first half. Of note, Frasca made five saves in the contest off of Northwestern’s 11 attempts.

William & Mary 2, Providence 0
William & Mary's Erin Dailey put the Tribe on the board in the 16th minute of the opening half (1-0). The Friars held the Tribe scoreless for the remainder of the half and entered the locker room leading the William & Mary in shots 7-4. Goalkeeper Shelby Hogan tallied one save in the first half and three for the contest, while the Tribe's Samantha Johnson and Katley Briguglio combined for the shutout with three saves. PC was held to two shots in the second half as William & Mary tacked on an insurance goal in the 66th minute.

Iowa State 3, Creighton 0
A scoreless first half saw the Cyclones control possession through the first ten minutes of play, but as the half moved forward the momentum moved to the Bluejays. Creighton began to control the ball and were able to fire away for a total of nine first half shots. Holding a 9-7 edge in shots at the break. The second half, however, saw Iowa State deliver an early goal in the 49th minute and tack on goals in the 73rd and 83rd. The Cyclones first goal came from Brooke Tasker as she sent in a shot after Marin Daniel collected possession off a deflection. Merin Mundt punched in the second goal on a free kick from 25 yards away at the 72:49 mark, while Mundt assisted Carly Langhurst for Iowa State's third goal. Iowa State outshot Creighton 21-12 in the match, including a 14-3 edge in the second half.

The Seton Hall women's soccer match with Siena Friday night was declared a no contest, and will not resume, following consistent lightning strikes in the area which began two minutes into the second half of a scoreless draw.
