NEW YORK – All 10 teams were in action to open the 2017 season with three games against top 25 opponents. Six of the matches went into overtime as BIG EAST men’s soccer went 3-6-1 on opening Friday. No. 25 Butler, Georgetown and St. John’s all netted their first W’s of the season. Seton Hall went to a 1-1 draw with Saint Peter’s.
GEORGETOWN 2, American 0
The Hoyas scored a pair of first-half goals to cruise to the 2-0 decision over local rival American as Georgetown starts the 2017 season 1-0. Junior midfielder Ethan Lochner and sophomore forward Achara scored goals for the Hoyas. BIG EAST preseason keeper of the year JT Marcinkowski had three saves in the net. Georgetown outshot American 14-6. The Hoyas host No. 19 Coastal Carolina at home on Monday.

No. 25 BUTLER 1, Illinois-Chicago 0 (OT)
Junior midfielder Jared Timmer scored a header in the 95th minute to give No. 25 Butler (1-0-0) their first win of the season over visiting UIC. The match was played in the newly-renamed Sellick Bowl on the Butler campus in Indianapolis. Timmer's game-winner came off a free kick from sophomore Lewis Suddick, who curved the ball toward Timmer from 20 yards out. Eric Dick posted a shutout in goal for the Bulldogs, making three saves on the evening. Butler had 10 corner kicks compared to five for the visitors. Next up, the Bulldogs travel to No. 9 Louisville on Monday.

ST. JOHN’S 3, Drexel 0
Led by a four-point effort from senior Harry Cooksley, the Red Storm (1-0-0) cruised to a 3-0 victory in its season opener against Drexel on Friday night at Vidas Field. Cooksley was a unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST selection. He scored the first goal and assisted on the two insurance goals. Alistair Johnston and Matt Forster scored the other two goals. Keeper Andrew Withers had three saves. St. John's outshot Drexel 18-8 on the game, including an 8-2 advantage in the second half. St. John’s travel next to Loyola Maryland on Sunday.

SETON HALL 1, Saint Peter’s 1 (2OT)
Seton Hall (0-0-1) battled Saint Peter's to a 1-1 draw in double overtime on Friday night in front of 1,211 fans at Owen T. Carroll Field for the season-opener. Andres Arcila scored for the Pirates and sophomore Steven Catudal made seven saves in his Pirate debut. Seton Hall had been down a goal before Arcila scored just before halftime. Both sides played a man down for the final 84:37 of regulation and extra time. Next up for Seton Hall is a home contest against Rider on Monday night.

No. 13 Virginia 3, VILLANOVA 2 (2OT)
A penalty kick goal scored by Virginia's Sergi Nus in the 105th minute proved to be the difference on Friday night as No. 13 Virginia edged Villanova 3-2 in double overtime here before a crowd of 3,594 at Klockner Stadium. The game-winner in the regular season opener for both sides came off the foot of Nus after a foul was called within the 18 yard box on VU. Senior Lucas Hodges and sophomore transfer Luca Mellor scored the goals for Villanova (0-1-0). After Hodges scored the first goal of the night, the Wildcats played a goal down for 15-plus minutes. Mellor evened the score in the 69th minute. Villanova hosts Temple next on Tuesday at the Higgins Soccer Complex.

Northern Illinois 3, DEPAUL 2 (OT)
DePaul (0-1-0) fell short of a win as NIU netted a golden goal in the 96th minute. Northern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of action as Nicholas Haas landed a shot from just outside the box into the back of the frame. The Blue Demons (0-1) netted the equalizer three minutes later when Philipp Konigstein’s corner kick connected with Max de Bruijne for a header attempt. NIU went up a goal heading into the break. With three seconds left in regulation, DePaul’s Philipp Konigstein tied it up to send the game to overtime. DePaul’s next contest is Sunday against inner-city rival UIC.

Loyola-Chicago 2, XAVIER 1 (OT)
Cameron Taylor found the back of the net in the 27th minute to give Xavier (0-1-0) an early lead in front of a rowdy home crowd of 1,204, but visiting Loyola Chicago equalized in the second half and escaped with a 2-1 win in overtime as men's soccer fell in its 2017 opener. For the match, XU held a 12-11 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Zachary Nelson made the start in goal and played the full match, making two saves in his second career start. The golden goal was scored by Loyola-Chicago in the 95th minute. Xavier is back at home on Sunday to host Drake.

No. 4 North Carolina 4, No. 12 PROVIDENCE 2
Junior midfielder Brendan Constantine and RS-sophomore midfielder Joao Serrano both notched goals, but No. 12 Providence (0-1-0) fell to No. 4 North Carolina, 4-2, on Friday night at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C. UNC had taken a 2-0 lead in the 33rd. Constantine and Serrano tied it up before the halftime break to change the tide. In the second half, UNC scored in the 63rd and 86th minutes to pull away in the NCAA Quarterfinal rematch between the Friars and Tar Heels. The fourth UNC goal was a penalty kick goal. The Friars will have a quick turn around before playing national runner up Wake Forest on Sunday.

Kentucky 1, MARQUETTE 0 (OT)
Marquette (0-1-0) held an 11-9 edge in shots and used a flurry of chances at the end of regulation to take momentum into overtime, but a broken play in the 99th minute led to a fortuitous bounce that allowed Kentucky to claim victory in the season opener on their home turf. The Wildcats held a 9-4 advantage in corners on the night. Marquette has a week break before returning home to host Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Sept. 1.

No. 17 Virginia Tech 2, No. 14 CREIGHTON 0
No. 14 Creighton held a 9-3 advantage in shots and 7-1 edge in corner kicks during the first half, but No. 17 Virginia Tech scored the lone goal during the opening 45 minutes, which would eventually be the game winner. Ricky Lopez-Espin ended the night with a match-high six shots, while seven different Creighton players recorded at least one shot on goal. The Bluejays concluded the match with a 19-7 shot advantage and 11-2 edge in corner kicks. VT keeper Ben Lundgaard ended the match with eight saves to keep the Bluejays out of the goal column. During the 85th minute the Hokies extended their lead with a goal from James Kasak. Creighton returns to the pitch at Morrison Stadium on Sunday night. The Bluejays will host Grand Canyon at 7 p.m.
