Shutout Streaks

Four BIG EAST teams enter Week 3 with active multi-game shutout streaks. Through four games, Butler and No. 10 Georgetown have surrendered just one goal apiece, with the Hoyas’ nearly 350-minute shutout streak leading the league. The Bulldogs haven’t allowed a goal in roughly 266 minutes, while RV Marquette is riding a 202-mintue streak. DePaul rounds out the group with its 182-minute shutout stretch. Butler’s .237 goals against average lists 15th nationally and is highlighted by a 0-0 draw at then-No. 18 Notre Dame. Arielle Schechtman of the nationally ranked Hoyas has the NCAA’s third-highest shutout total (3) as Georgetown’s lone goal allowed this season was 11 minutes into the season against then-No. 1 West Virginia. The Hoyas have since shutout three consecutive opponents by a 10-0 scoring margin. BIG EAST teams combined for six wins on Sunday with all six done in scoreless fashion, including Providence’s 1-0 win over CCSU and unbeaten St. John’s 2-0 victory over Fairfield.

Scoring Onslaught
BIG EAST teams piled on the goals this past weekend, combining for a 27-12 margin. No. 10 Georgetown and DePaul set the team scoring standard for BIG EAST squads this season as each posted 5-0 outcomes over the weekend. The Hoyas topped Loyola (Md.) on Sunday while the Blue Demons bounced Akron on Friday, with DePaul’s Franny Cerny setting the individual game high for points this season with five off two goals and an assist against the Zips. Boasting a 2-0-1 record, St. John’s is the lone BIG EAST team to score multiple goals in every game this season, averaging 2.33 scores per contest with junior Christina Bellero scoring a goal in each of the first three outings.

In The Polls
A number of highly ranked teams were dealt losses last week, causing a shakeup in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Following a pair of shutout wins, Georgetown moved up one spot to No. 10 and has a notable matchup at No. 5 Stanford on Friday at 7 p.m. ET. Riding a three-match win streak highlighted by Sunday’s 2-0 win at Louisville, Marquette received votes for the first time this season. The Golden Eagles return to the pitch Friday at home against Central Michigan. DePaul will also face a top-25 squad this weekend when the Blue Demons travel to No. 12 Texas A&M on Sunday (2:30 p.m.).
