WASHINGTON – Fresh off the most successful year in program history, the Georgetown University women’s soccer team will open the 2017 season ranked No. 5 in the country in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.
West Virginia opens the season ranked No. 1, followed by Stanford, Southern California and South Carolina at No. 4, with the Blue & Gray rounding out the top-five teams. North Carolina is ranked No. 6, with Florida, Brigham Young, UCLA and Auburn rounding out the top-10.
Georgetown advanced to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in program history and lost to eventual national champion Southern California. The Hoyas, seeded No. 2 in their region in the NCAA Tournament, finished the season with a 20-3-3 overall record and won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the first time in program history. Georgetown set program records for wins (20), shutouts (17) and goals scored (61).
Georgetown opens the 2017 season on Friday, Aug. 18 at home, hosting preseason No. 1 West Virginia. The Hoyas will also play at No. 2 Stanford (Sept. 1) and host No. 21 Rutgers (Sept. 10).
The Hoyas opened preseason camp earlier this week and play the first of two exhibition games on Wednesday, Aug. 9, hosting Quinnipiac at Shaw Field (4 p.m.). The team’s final preseason tune-up is on Friday, Aug. 11 at Maryland (7 p.m.).
