Providence Sweeps Cross Country Weekly Awards

NEW YORK – Providence’s Catarina Rocha and Aaron Hanlon have captured BIG EAST Athletes of the Week honors in cross country.  Rocha was named Female Athlete of the Week and Hanlon was selected Male Athlete of the Week after their performances in the Coast to Coast Battle-In-Beantown Invitational.
 
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Aaron Hanlon, Providence, Sr. – Hanlon finished 24th in the Coast to Coast Battle-In-Beantown Invitational with a time of 24:50.3 in the 8k competition at Boston’s Franklin Park.  Rainy conditions had a significant effect on the race times.  As a team, the Friars finished seventh in a field that included No. 3 Syracuse, No. 21 Indiana and No. 27 Illinois.
 
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Catarina Rocha, Providence, Grad. – Rocha finished fourth in the Coast to Coast Battle-in-Beantown Invitational with a time of 17:04.6 in rainy conditions over the 5K course.  The three runners who finished ahead of Rocha were all-Americans.  The Friars won the team competition in a field that included No. 18 Indiana and No. 25 Georgetown.  This is the third straight year that Providence has won the meet.
 
BIG EAST Notes
Women’s News – Georgetown’s Josette Norris was the team’s top performer in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.  She finished in ninth place with a time of 17:29 in the 5K race.  The Hoyas finished third as a team.
 
BIG EAST Presence In the USTFCCCA Polls Continues
Three BIG EAST teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA women’s poll of Sept. 26.  Providence is No. 8 followed by Villanova at No. 15 and Georgetown at No. 23.  In the men’s poll, Georgetown is No. 17.
